Red and Black Cloth Hardback. Etat : Very Good. First Edition. 1902. First edition. xix, 462pp., a 2 page catalogue of other books on africa, many coloured folding maps (all listed are present), numerous black and white illustrations, and 8 folding sheets of freehand sketches showing the enemy's position in engagements between the Vaal River and Barberton, May-October 1900, in a pocket at the end of the book. Major Charles Sydney Goldman (1868-1958) was a British businessman, politician, author, and journalist. Born in Cape Colony, Goldman was an uitlander who spent much of his life in the Transvaal. During the Second Boer War, Goldman was a war correspondent for The Standard and was a major in the British forces, who assisted Winston Churchill as a war correspondent. Initially attached to Sir Redvers Buller's relief force, he travelled with them as far as Ladysmith after which he transferred to the cavalry advancing north in order to report on their endeavours. These experiences served as the foundation for Goldman's subsequent book With General French and the Cavalry in South Africa. He writes in the preface: "The purpose of this book is to follow the fortunes of our cavalry in the South African War, omitting the Natal campaign, and dealing chiefly with the work of the mounted troops under the leadership of Lieutenant-General Sir John French. The book is bound in the original black cloth covered boards with a red cloth spine and gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some light soiling on the boards. The corners and spine ends are bumped with a little damage to the cloth at the spine ends. The spine is slightly faded with wear to the titling. Ther contents are tight and clean apart from a few small marks from finger smudges, etc., including a finger smudge and small stain near the bottom of the title-page. There is light foxing to the frontispiece and a little damage to the top 3" of the spine edge of page 69. The maps are clean with a few having small tears of up to about 1 1/2" on the spine edge and slight mis-folding to a few others. There is no inscription. PLEASE NOTE: This is a heavy book and extra postage may be required for non-UK orders.

First edition of Goldmann's magnum opus, one of the most important and substantial studies of South African gold mines. Sydney Goldmann (1868-1958), an uitlander of German-Jewish descent, made his fortune in gold mining; he later served as a Boer War correspondent for The Standard alongside Winston Churchill, before entering the House of Commons as a Unionist MP from 1910 until 1918. He first published a study of South Africa's gold mines in 1892, his history of the Witwatersrand companies, which met with a favourable reaction from the investing public both in Europe and South Africa. He followed this with the present, vastly expanded work; richly illustrated, it offered investors the most detailed study to date of South African mines, at a time when there was a rush of capital to the region in the hope of rapid wealth, and only a few years before the question of the gold mines would trigger the Boer War. Provenance: founded in May 1773, the Birmingham Assay Office is one of four such offices in the UK responsible for assaying (testing) and hallmarking precious metals (gold, silver, platinum, and palladium). Its establishment was a product of the growth of large scale manufacturing and the use of machines for silver production in Birmingham and Sheffield during the 1770s. The Office's library is particularly rich in works on metallurgy, mining, and design, but also includes books on chemistry, alchemy, numismatics, and horology. 3 volumes, large octavo. Original dark purple cloth, spines and front covers lettered in gilt, covers panelled in blind with decorative cornerpieces, black endpapers, top edge dark purple. Vol. 1 with 4 folding and 4 full-page plates, 1 of each coloured. Vol. 3 (plate vol.) with 99 plates, most folding and coloured. Tables throughout. Errata slips to pp. 112 and 120 of vol. 2, card ruler inserted into rear pastedown pocket of vol. 3 ("Scale for Farms 100 [and 150] Cape Roods to the Inch"). Small circular library stamp of the Assay Office Birmingham to front free endpaper versos, contemporary gift inscription to vol. 2 front free endpaper, "Ted from Eve", dated 1895. Spines and tops of covers sunned, ends and corners bumped and lightly rubbed (some loss to vol. 1 headcap, short nicks to others, a few water spots to vol. 3 foot), vol. 1 inner hinges only cracked but firm; small closed tear to lower edge of vol. 3 plate 29 and a few others with tiny tears to creases near gutter, but otherwise the plates in excellent condition; a few instances of faint soiling, overall the contents crisp and clean. A very good copy.
