Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good Minus. 1st Edition. First Edition (SD). 'Based on Unpublished Manuscripts. With 182 Illustrations.' Includes 'comments' (their impressions of the book) from 14 individuals, including Albert Einstein, listed on the title page. This book is signed and inscribed by the author to the renowned actor Theodore Bikel. The inscription is on the first front end paper. It reads: To Theodor Bikel with the compliments of H. L. Gordon, Dec. 15, 65.' If you aren't familiar with Mr. Bikel, take a look at his Wikipedia page. You can see the maroon covers in the photos provided. They are quite clean. There is a little bit of dulling on some parts of the covers. The gilt lettering on the front and on the spine is very bright. There isn't much wear, two tiny scratches on the front, a crease/scuff off the bottom edge of the spine. The corners are in very solid shape, a tiny bit of rubbing, no rub-through. The top and middle edges look very good. The bottom edges have a few areas where the maroon color has rubbed off. The book is square and pretty solidly bound. I saw a few instances where there was a little bit of strain at the juncture between two facing pages, but in none of these instances were there any cracks or spaces there. The covers are solidly, tightly bound. On the whole, the pages are quite clean and fairly bright as well. There is a small area of foxing off the top edge of the frontispiece (not reaching the illustration) and off the top edge of the facing blank page. The same is the case with the title page and its facing blank verso of the frontispiece, there are just a few spots off the top edge. They do not reach the print on the title page. After that it's pretty clear sailing. In scrolling through I didn't see any spotting/foxing. The pages are exceptionally clean. I didn't see any soiling. There are no markings. No attachments. And with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. I've had it in a fitted protective cover for as long as I've owned the book. The covers are very clean. There's just a very light amount of handling soiling on the rear cover. As you can see there are two small losses off the top edge of the spine, also a couple of teeny ones off the bottom edge. There's a 1/2" tear off the top edge of the rear cover. The flaps are in pretty nice condition. There is one light stain (or possibly just a cloud of foxing) right off the top edge of the front flap. There is a thin strip of toning off the top edge of the rear flap. The jacket is not priced or clipped. Dr. Gordon must've been some sort of genius. The jacket tells us that he held ten academic degrees (in course), four Masters and six Doctorates in: Medicine, Psychology, Education, Natural Sciences, Philology, Archaeology, Literature, Theology, International Law, and Fine Arts. Focus man, focus. It also states that he made numerous contributions to scientific periodicals in many languages and was medical editor of the Universal Jewish Encyclopedia. When this book was published he was serving as Senior Surgeon in the US Public Health Service. From the dust jacket: 'This is the first authoritative and complete biography of the great codifier Joseph Caro, author of the renowned code Shulhan Aruch and the classic legal commentaries Kesef Mishneh and Beth Joseph. However, it is at the same time an important contribution to psychology and psychiatry, as it introduces for the first time the unique phenomenon of MAGGIDIC hallucinations. It is based on the "communications" received by Caro from the great beyond for more than fifty-two years through his familiar spirit, the MAGGID, as described by him in his secret diary, now for the first time rendered in a modern language. It reveals the most intimate fears, hopes and ambitions of the genius, set to uplift and redeem the world through a life of holiness and toil.'. Inscribed by Author(s).
