Later Brown Cloth Hardback. Etat : Very Good - See Description. First Edition. 1813. First edition. xvi, 575pp., an 11 page index, engraved frontispiece, vignette title-page, engraved plate showing the arms of the Earls of Sutherland, and a double-page facsimile indentiture. This is the scarce first edition of a genealogical study of a noble house of Scotland, the manuscript, from which this work is printed having been in the possession of the Marchioness of Stafford. The work of Scottish politician and courtier Sir Robert Gordon of Gordonstoun, known as the historian of the noble house of Sutherland, the work details the genealogical history of that house until the year 1630. Also present is Gilbert Gordon of Sallach's contemporary continuation of the original manuscript, updating the genealogy to the year 1651. The book has been professionally rebacked and recased (probably around the turn of the century) in new brown cloth covered boards with silver titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition. The contents are tight and the book has new cream endpapers. The pages are clean apart from a few small marks and light soiling on the half-title page. There is some expected browning and foxing to the frontispiece and some foxing to the plate and facsimile document. The title-page show offsetting from the frontispiece and a name has been written near the top edge. A very few pages have small and neatly written pencil notes that could be easily erased. PLEASE NOTE: This is a large and very heavy book and extra postage will be required.
