Browning to end-papers and edges, pencil notations to Appendix D ('A sportsman's bookshelf'). Good-plus, lacks dust-wrapper. A practical guide to shooting in India and Ceylon as it was in the 1940s. "This book. is the outcome of the author's unique experiences of big and small game of the jungles of India and Ceylon. .It is excellently written: the author's descriptions of hunting experiences and of the life and spirit of the jungle are graphic and thrilling, and not less absorbing are his observations on the natural history of the various game which the hunter encounters. Above all, there runs through the book the true sportsman's admiration and respect for the creatures he hunts - from the humble pigeon to the lordly tiger, and an affection for the native people amongst whom the author has lived for many years." Chapters include: Choices of shooting ground and preliminary arrangements - India; Preliminary arrangements (continued) - India and Ceylon; Equipment - weapons; Equipment (continued) - clothing, medical and literature; Equipment (continued) - food, sundries and general notes; Teal to tiger - shikar days with small game; Teal to tiger (continued) - shikar days with deer, buffalo and bison; Teal to tiger (continued) - shikar days with bear, panther and tiger; Notes on the tiger: beating, sitting-up and stalking; Notes on the panther and the sloth bear; Notes on the Indian bison and buffalo; Notes on deer and antelope; Notes on pig, and on some of the game destroyers; Notes on small game and game birds; Taxidermy and the preservation of trophies; A portrait and some memories.
