Edition originale
Hardcover. Presumed first edition (no additional printings listed) . Original brown and black stamped decorative cloth, stamped gilt lettering on spine, approximately 5 x 7 1/2 inches, 6 pp preliminary ads (for Grand Union Tea Company) + 407 pp (dictionary) + 192 pp (cyclopedia) , illustrated with 5 pp of small black and white drawings. Hardcover, good, no dustjacket. Some soil on cloth, corners lightly bumped, an approximately 1 inch diameter x 1/2 inch deep piece chipped (or chewed? ) off foot of spine (text unaffected) , erased previous owner's inscription on endpapers, paper age tanned, front and rear hinges cracked with gauze exposed, corners of first and last few leaves creased, with a few nicks and chips along edges there (text unaffected) , otherwise tight, clean, relatively crisp and unmarked; probably never really read. Of particular interest is the cyclopedia section, a typical Victorian catch-all including such things as how many men and horses various thicknesses of ice will hold, cost of tin roofing, population and debts of cities, Grand Army of the Republic officers, woman suffrage, and perhaps most interesting of all, "The Housekeeper's Friend and Medical Department" containing formulas for various patent medicines (some containing arsenic, opium, morphine, etc) and treaments, such as curing drunkenness by keeping the patient intoxicated for at least five days straight, how to make and inhale laughing gas as a recreational drug, and even a recipe for embalming fluid! Reference; advertising; encyclopedia; formulary.
