Original Wraps. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : No Jacket, as Issued. Paul Hogarth [cover drawing] (illustrateur). First Paperback Edition. A second printing of the first UK paperback edition, and the first printing in the Penguin Modern Classics series, published in 1961 - priced at 3/6 on the front cover - with the 1960s-style grey background illustrated cover [with cover drawing by Paul Hogarth]. With eight pages of monochrome photographs in the centre of the book. The first printing was published on 24th March 1960 as a Penguin Biography - both versions carry Penguin Catalogue No. 1443. The book was originally published in hardback in the UK in 1929 by Jonathan Cape, with a revised edition by Cassell in 1957. The Penguin edition follows the revised text. ***A very good copy in illustrated grey and white card covers. The covers have some marks and creasing commensurate with age and handling, but are very clean, with just some light creasing at the edges. There is a light pen mark on the back cover. The spine is slightly browned, but there are no reading creases and there is no lean to the binding which is straight. No fading to the covers. Internally the book is also very good, with no inscriptions and no serious creases or tears. The paper stock is only slightly tanned with age. No foxing. No dustwrappers were issued on these later Penguin editions. ***282 pages plus a four-page publisher's catalogue at the back of the book. 180mm x 111mm. ***'"Good-Bye to All That" is an autobiography by Robert Graves which first appeared in 1929, when the author was 34 years old. "It was my bitter leave-taking of England," he wrote in a prologue to the revised second edition of 1957, "where I had recently broken a good many conventions". The title may also point to the passing of an old order following the cataclysm of the First World War; the supposed inadequacies of patriotism, the interest of some in atheism, feminism, socialism and pacifism, the changes to traditional married life, and not least the emergence of new styles of literary expression, are all treated in the work, bearing as they did directly on Graves's life. The unsentimental and frequently comic treatment of the banalities and intensities of the life of a British army officer in the First World War gave Graves fame, notoriety and financial security, but the book's subject is also his family history, childhood, schooling and, immediately following the war, early married life; all phases bearing witness to the "particular mode of living and thinking" that constitute a poetic sensibility. Laura Riding, Graves's lover, is credited with being a "spiritual and intellectual midwife" to the work.' [Wiki] ***A second printing of the first Penguin paperback edition of this famous autobiographical work by the poet and novelist Robert Graves, in very good condition. This printing was the first in the Penguin Modern Classics series, with cover art by Paul Hogarth. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
