Livre
Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. In Yiddish. 96 pages. 225 x 115 mm. THe author was a Jewish educator who was in charge of the education department of the Jewish community in Warsaw and wrote books on reading, writing and mathematics for the lower grades. Shortly after the German invasion of Poland and conquest of Warsaw, he fled with his family to Bialistok, which was under Soviet occupation. But 2 years later, when the Germans invaded Russia, he was appointed secretary of the Ghetto's Yudenrat and in the winter of 1943/1944 he committed suicide. The rest of his family suffered worse fate, except for one son who made it to Australia where he was a prominent violinist.

Soft cover. Etat : Very Good. ¶ 22,5 x 15,2 cm. 96 pp. Stapled in publisher s wrappers. Spine damaged, front and back wrapper with a missing corner, otherwise well-preserved. ¶ A lovely illustrated Yiddish chrestomathy, intended for second grade. Printed on cheap and brittle paper, this is a rare survival. ¶ Raphael Gutman (1883-1943/44) was a well-regarded Jewish-Polish pedagogue from Sokoly. He studied philosophy and led a school for the Jewish community in Warsaw. Gutman wrote many successful Yiddish, Hebrew, Russian and Polish textbooks, some of which were reprinted several times, in both Poland and the United States. ¶ Following the Nazi invasion of Poland, Gutman fled Warsaw with his family to Białystok, which was then occupied by the Soviet Union. About two years later, however, the Nazis also occupied Białystok and established the infamous Białystok Ghetto. Gutman was appointed secretary of the Judenrat in the ghetto. He probably died in the winter of 1943 or 1944. According to Yiddish Leksikon he committed suicide, but according to Sokoly: B'maavak l'hayim he was murdered by the Nazis. ¶ Very rare: WorldCat lists one other copy only; not in The Noah Cotsen Library of Yiddish Children's Literature. For Gutman: Rejzen, Leḳsiḳon fun der Yidisher liṭeraṭur, vol. 1, col. 550; Fogel, 'REFUEL (RAPHAEL) GUTMAN', in: Yiddish Leksikon; Sokoly: B'maavak l'hayim (Tel Aviv 1975), p. 302 (a digital English translation can be found here).

New York: Shorewood Publishing in association with Rabin & Krueger Gallery, (1960). First edition. A very good copy. A nice, but not uncommon monograph of the Russian-born New York painter, known as a spokesman for realism in the 20th century. This copy has a full-page original ink drawing by Soyer inside the front cover. The drawing entitled "some family of constitutional inadequates" depicts a group of six people standing naked. The drawing is inscribed to the journalist Leonard Lyons and family.
