'The Victoria History of the Counties of England' was an early twentieth-century history project that aimed to produce full and complete encyclopaedic resources for each county in England. It was dedicated to the late Queen Victoria and was produced exclusively for subscribers by Archibald Constable & Co.This set includes six volumes from the 'Oxford' series, including Volumes II to VI, and Volume IX, a mixture of first editions and reprints.Volume II is the first edition published in 1907 edited by William Page and it including information on religious houses, social and economic history, industries, agriculture, forestry, and sport. It includes an engraved frontispiece, four additional plates, two maps, and numerous in-text illustrations.Volume III was a 1954 reprint published by The Oxford University Press, edited by Rev. H.E. Salter and Mary D. Lobel, and includes information on schools and Oxford University. It includes thirty-nine plates and twenty-nine maps, eleven of which are folding.Volume IV was a 1979 reprint published by The Oxford University Press, edited by Alan Crossley, and includes information on the history of Oxford, including medieval Oxford, modern Oxford, the castle of Oxford, public services, municipal buildings, and more. It includes an illustrated frontispiece, twenty-two plates, and eleven maps.Volume V was a 1957 reprint published by The Oxford University Press, edited by Mary D. Lobel, and includes information on Bullingdon Hundred. Volumes II, III, and V have been rebound in red library cloth with the library locations in gilt to the spines, whereas Volumes IV, VI, and IX are in the publisher's original cloth with library locations stamped to the tail of the spines. All volumes contain library bookplates to the front pastedowns, and library stamps to the odd page. Volumes IV and IX are enclosed in the original unclipped dust wrappers. Volumes II, III, and V have been rebound in red library cloth with the library locations in gilt to the spines, whereas Volumes IV, VI, and IX are in the publisher's original cloth with library locations stamped to the tail of the spines. Externally, very smart, with some light shelf wear to Volume VI. Bumping to the head and tail of Volume VI, and cloth split to the rear joint to Volume VI. Small drop of white ink to the tail of each volumes. Volumes IV and IX are enclosed in the original unclipped dust wrappers, which are smart, with just a touch of edgewear and a small amount of sunning. Library locations have been stamped to the tails of the backstrips, and there are a few marks to the dust wrapper to Volume IX. Internally, plate opposite page 292 in Volume III is detached but present, otherwise all volumes are firmly bound. The odd handling mark and library stamp to the pages, otherwise pages are bright and clean. Very Good Indeed. book.
