Quarto (10 1/4" x 7") bound in original publisher's green cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First edition. The pleasures of gardens and gardening are manifold and extend beyond the boundary walls and hedges to works of art that gardens have inspired - to literature, pictures, pottery and porcelain, textile design, and much else. The authors' purpose in this volume hs been together up some of these delights as originally described or displayed, to sift and sort them into an ordered array, and link them together with a commentary in which they obtrude as little as possible between source and reader.
