Talley (1903-1998) a Military Engineer, well known for his achievements in supervising the construction of Elmendorf Air Force Base in 1941, shoring up Alaska's defenses from the Japanese in WWII. In 1931 he went to Nicaragua to conduct the Nicaragua Canal Survey, and found himself restoring basic services and reconstructing the City of Managua after a devastating earthquake. He pioneered the use of aerial topographic surveying, and invented a portable stereocomparagraph. From January 1941 to June 1943, he was in charge of overseeing all Army and Air Corps construction projects in Alaska, which included construction of 28 major projects undertaken prior to and after the attack on Pearl Harbor. In the 1950's he was promoted to Brigadier General. 1) A hand signed Thank You Letter from General Wade H. Haislip, Vice Chief of Staff, United States Army. Dated 8 January, 1951, on his letterhead whilst in Washington, along with the envelope. General Wade H. Haislip (1889-1971) was a Senior U. S. Army Officer who served on both WWI and WWII, where he led XV Corps on the Western Front. He later became a four-star general, serving as Vice Chief of Staff on U.S. Army from 1949-1951. 2) A two-page letter from Prof. Ir.W. Schermerhorn, with a bold inked signature, dated March 28, 1940, along with a torn envelope, written from Delft in the Netherlands. Schermerhorn (1894-1977) became professor of land surveying and geodesy at the Delft University of Technology in 1926. He was a leader in photogrammetry and founder of the International Training Centre for Aerial Survey. He was also a Dutch politician, serving as Prime Minister of the Netherlands for one year, 1945-1946, the first cabinet after WWII. This letter to B. B. Talley dated 1940, references Schermerhorn's visit to the United States, and his apologies for having to leave early on account of the war, without meeting him, as Talley's book was used in his classes in Delft.
