It was an age that, wrote Marsilio Ficino in 1492, "has like a golden age restored to light the almost extinct liberal arts: grammar, poetry, painting, architecture, sculpture, music." The book memorably describes all of these. But Hale is not concerned simply w/ the arts: his interest is much wider. "This was the 1st age in which the words 'Europe' & 'European' acquired a widely understood significance. It saw the emergence of a new & pervasive attitude to what were considered the most valued aspects of civilized life. It witnessed the most concentrated wave of intellectual & cultural energy that had yet passed over the continent. It was also a period in which there were such dramatic changes of fortune (religious, political, economic &, through overseas discoveries, global) that more people than ever before saw their time as unique, referring to 'this new age,' 'the present age,' 'our age'; to one a 'blessed age,' to another, 'the worst age in history.'" * Hale paints his picture w/ an astonishing multiplicity of themes, people & ideas. How did Europeans see themselves & others? What united them & separated them, both geographically & within their communities? What languages did they speak & write & how widely? How did they fix themselves in time & space? What did they call civilized? What did they buy & sell? How did they dress & eat? What did they think about & how did they communicate their thoughts? * One of the strengths of this book, which moves far beyond conventional or social history, is that it resists the temptation to answer any of these questions simply or glibly, or to impose unifying characteristics on the period or the continent. Instead, Hale allows people to speak for themselves, bringing the age to life w/ wonderful freshness, immediacy & diversity. His canvas is not covered w/ broad brush-strokes but w/ pointillist details & individual voices; there is something pleasing & unexpected in every corner. "The Civilization of Europe in the Renaissance" is the greatest achievement of one of the world's leading Renaissance historians & is itself a landmark in the humanist tradition whose origins it describes & at a time when the meanings of "Europe" & "European" culture are being questioned & debated, it is also a book that shows us where we can find the roots of both of them & how much the present & future can be illuminated by the past. * HIGHEST PRAISE: "A SUPERB evocation of the Europe of 'the long 16th century,' wonderfully fresh & RICH in its copious illustrative detail, a great tapestry of Renaissance Europe, (rich in) incidental delights, the summation of John Hale's career as a historian & the crowning achievement of a master-designer whose richly fabricated works have given so much pleasure." - J.H. Elliott, Regius Professor of Modern History, Oxford University * SHIPPING: MNEMOSYNE carefully wraps, labels & custom-packages this fine book for FREE domestic shipment via USPS MEDIA MAIL or USPS PRIORITY MAIL for a below-cost additional fee & to international destinations via USPS FIRST CLASS INTERNATIONAL AIRMAIL at our quoted below cost rates.
