Octavo, pp. [1-4] [1] 2-318 [319-324: press notices], eight inserted plates with illustrations by John Jellicoe and Val Prince after designs by the author, original decorated red cloth, front panel stamped in blind, spine panel stamped in blind and gold. Revised edition. Volume two of the revised text. The three-volume first edition was published under the author's "Dryasdust" pseudonym circa 1899-1900 by Harrison & Sons. "Omnibus collection of 'blood-curdling' tales with decidedly mid-Victorian flavor, in spite of publication date; set in an old-fashioned frame, too, told 'round the Yule Log at 'Ye Headless Ladye,' a Midlands hostelry of the old coaching days circa 1800, by an informal club of travelers and their hosts. Enlivened by a Dickensian mixture of the cold grue and the grotesquely humorous: like the fat boy, they 'only wants to make your flesh creep.' Notable tales in volume two include 'Execution' and 'The Waxen Image'."- Robert Knowlton. Ashley, Who's Who in Horror and Fantasy Fiction, p. 87. Barron (ed), Fantasy Literature 2-50. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 565. Schlobin, The Literature of Fantasy 1157. Tymn (ed), Horror Literature 3-89. Bleiler (1978), p. 64. Reginald 06649A. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 102 who notes that "sets of this edition show up less often than do sets of the Dryasdust edition." Mild bruises to corner tips, a bit of soiling to cloth, endpapers (cheap pulp stock) a bit darkened, else a bright, very attractive copy of a book that usually shows up very worn. (#75388).

Octavo, pp. [1-4] [1] 2-296 [297-304: "press notices"] [note: first leaf is a blank], original decorated red cloth, front panel stamped in blind, spine panel stamped in gold and blind. First edition. Plucky young Briton possessed by spirit of malevolent Boer, "in order to revenge himself for his own death." Written in Halidom's distinctly plummy mid-Victorian style; his pseudonym has never been penetrated, but, like William de Morgan, he was likely a child of Dickensian days and came to fiction with his tastes fixedly old-fashioned. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 102. Bleiler (1978), p. 91. Reginald 06646. Cloth lightly worn at upper spine end, pulp paper endpapers tanned, a tight, bright, very good copy. (#171594).

First edition. Jellicoe, John & Prince, Vval. First edition. Illustrated by John Jellicoe and Val Prince after designs by the author. 3 vols. 8vo. Dryasdust Horror. A classic collection of tales of the supernatural, first issued here by "Dryasdust", then later, in 1903, under the name of M.Y. Halidom. "M.Y. Halidom, itself a pseudonym, without doubt, is also a 'pen-name' of 'Dryasdust', whose 'Tales of the Wonder Club', a rare and much-sought fantasy book, was the source of much speculation as to its author, at the turn of the century. The problem has never been satisfactorily solved and the talented author is an unknown, even today. There is little room to doubt that it is someone of importance in the literary world" (Wolff) In 2005, British businessman and writer Alexander Huth (1838-1914) was identified as the author of Tales of the Wonder Club under his psuedonyms "Dryasdust" and "M.Y. Halidom". Wolff 7640; Bleiler: Guide To Supernatural Fiction, 565 In publisher's gilt-stamped plum cloth. Spine of first volume faded to brown, corners bumped, but overall a bright, tight set Illustrated by John Jellicoe and Val Prince after designs by the author. 3 vols. 8vo.
