Engraved plates with tissue-guards. 8vo, pp.viii:224:[4, advertisements], original ornately and decoratively embossed calf, a.e.g.; corners and headbands bumped and extremely rubbed; binding edge-rubbed and with loss of surface to a narrow strip on upper cover; stitching broken to two sections, text case almost detached from binding at front; almost half front free-endpaper removed; rear end-paper removed; ink ownership signature on front-pastedown; some foxing; plates with faint stains to borders.

Hardcover. Etat : Fair. Covers have scraping to the rear edges and general light corner and light edge wear. Covers are lightly rubbed, including the decoration. Damp staining to lower outer corners of plates and adjacent pages. Plates have varying amounts of foxing, thorough on some. Pages have varying amounts of browning. Name ink stamped on many pages, including all of the plates. Each inner hinge has a split. ; ".from paintings, by various artists, after sketches by W. Perring." Green leather covers with gilt decoration.

Large octavo (210 x 170 mm), publisher's blind-blocked green cloth (corners bumped), upper board with chromolithographic illustration inlaid within gilt border (very good), spine decorated in gilt (short split to cloth at tail), pastedowns and endpapers with publisher's advertisements, original owner's name in ink to verso of front endpaper, colour frontispiece and title page, pp. vi, 168, [8 publisher's advertisements]; with numerous full-page plates and text illustrations by Harrison Weir (fknown as "The Father of the Cat Fancy"); occasional handling marks at the margins, but generally an excellent copy. First edition of this beautiful animal book for children: although stories about cats and dogs predominate, there are also anecdotes about horses, chickens, elephants, bears, birds, sheep, mice, rats and other creatures.
