Seconde édition, augmentée (l'originale était parue en 1781 à l'adresse de Porrentruy). Le père Elie, était un missionnaire et prédicateur du Tiers-Ordre de Saint-François et comme pour beaucoup de ses semblables qui vomissaient la pensée du XVIIIe siècle, Voltaire était sa bête noire, sa figure intime de l'Antéchrist, et il fit partie de cette chaîne qui répandit sur la mort du philosophe les rumeurs les plus délirantes.

(reliure de l'époque). Il s'agit évidemment d'une démolition en règle des principales orientations de la pensée des Lumières. Maximilien-Marie Harel (1749-1823), qui prit en religion le nom de père Elie, était un missionnaire et prédicateur du Tiers-Ordre de Saint-François. Après avoir émigré en 1790, il revint en France uniquement en 1802 pour s'acquitter des fonctions de vicaire à Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Comme pour beaucoup de ses semblables qui vomissaient la pensée du XVIIIe siècle, Voltaire était sa bête noire, mais pas seulement, et ici, la plupart des penseurs du XVIIIe siècle sont repris pour leur simple manque de révérence à la théologie catholique.
