Das Bildungsniveau der Frauen ist seit der Bildungsreform 1975 kontinuierlich gestiegen, im Gegensatz dazu ist das der Männer kontinuierlich gesunken. Seit Anfang der 1990er Jahre beträgt der Anteil männlicher Maturanten weniger als 50% und nimmt immer weiter ab. Im Jahr 2001 gab es überhaupt nur mehr 43% männliche Absolventen und das bei einer durchschnittlichen Bevölkerungsverteilung von ca. 48,7% weiblich und 51,3% männlich1. Im ersten Moment könnte angenommen werden, dass diese Entwicklung nur mit dem veränderten Bildungsverhalten der weiblichen Bevölkerung zusammenhängt. Selbstverständlich ist dies ein Aspekt der weit reichende Veränderungen in der österreichischen Bildungslandschaft mit sich gebracht hat, aber der sinkende Anteil der Buben kann nur zum Teil auf die wachsende Anzahl der Mädchen in den höheren Schulen zurückgeführt werden. Vielmehr steckt eine unterschiedliche Entwicklung des Bildungsverhaltens der Geschlechter dahinter. Entscheidungen, die ein solches Ergebnis hervorrufen, werden bereits in der Volksschule getroffen. So sind in den Hauptschulen deutlich weniger Mädchen als Burschen anzutreffen und in der AHS Unterstufe ist es genau umgekehrt. 92 pp. Deutsch.
