Etat : Collectible - SIGNED. FIRST. nFINE/ Good+.jacket in BRODART. Grey boards. SIGNED by AUTHOR, (Sgt) Bill Harr, ffep, WWII Combat Correspondent with the 45th Infantry Division. Ernie Pyle wasn't the only war correspondent. Harr served hand-by-boot with the 45th Infantry that pushed all the way through Italy, into Germany, to Munich and grippingly, through the Dachau death camp, which Harr also graphically describes first-hand. His articles were read only by GI's in military publications through the war and Harr was awarded the Bronze Star for his writings. With black-out restrictions lifted he was permitted to compile his writings into this book (a first edition w/ surviving jacket), released for publication in 1952. He signed this copy with 1/24/52 inscription on the ffep to a fellow soldier he served with overseas. What is so special is his words flow like from the mouth of the average American soldier - driven, dedicated and fighting for - what is right. Harr describes that, after enduring and surviving battle , struggle and life threatening battle after skirmish after mission after battle after raw blood combat - when the end came, it just sat ther in silence. No whoop-up, no celebration, just the silence of no more gun fire. In Munich, a subdued military parade was walked out, with one guy turning to Harr saying, "It's hard to believe, but yesterday at this time we were fighting for our lives two blocks from here." This was WWII. This was Bill Harr's important, in the ditches and on the open fighting grounds, diary of that war. [B201]. Signed by Author.
