Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. 1st Edition. Covers a little marked. Numerous plates and maps, two plates of osprey rocks mildly stained in one corner; top edge gilt. "On one of the headlands at Diebidale nearly every ledge of sufficient breadth is occupied by the Shag, five nests ranging side by side on a single shelf of precipitous cliff; this and successive tiers of rock are copiously sprinkled with whitewash. On the 12th July 1888, I counted twenty-seven birds on these ledges at once, and at the same moment nine others, all adults, were clustering together on a stack. This was at eight o'clock in the evening, when the birds had chiefly returned from their fishing excursions. Herring Gulls clamoured in wrathful indignation at our intrusion, and Larus marinus hovered overhead, muttering subdued but ominous warnings verified by a drenching evening" (H.A.M.).
