Hardcover. Etat : Fair. First Edition. Rust-colored cloth covers with gilt stamping. Large chip and tear at the head of the spine, not affecting the gilt title. Edge wear and a bit of staining evidence on the rear cover. Inner hinges cracked and an intact section of pages (front free endpaper through the title page) has separated, but is present. Heavy foxing to the title page and facing frontispiece portrait of Dr. Hayes. Scattered, light foxing otherwise. [xxiv] 454 pages illustrated with three maps, two of which were drawn by Dr. Hayes, and six engravings, four made from drawings of sketches by Dr. Hayes, one from a description by Dr. Hayes, and one from a photograph by Dr. Hayes. Included in the front matter are a Preface by the author, List of Subscribers to the Expedition, List of Illustrations, Explanation of [Chapter] Tail-Pieces, and Contents. The tail-piece illustrations were drawn on wood by G.G. White from photographs and sketches by Dr. Hayes and engraved mostly by J.A. Bogert. Dr. I.I. Hayes was Issac Israel Hayes (1832-1881), a physician, Arctic explorer, author, and lecturer. He served as surgeon under Elisha Kent Kane to search for Sir John Franklin in 1853. In 1854, he led the party that discovered and explored what is now Ellesmere Island. In 1860 Hayes commanded the schooner United States at Boston in an attempt to approach the North Pole via the open sea which he believed to exist north of the 85th parallel. That expedition became the subject of this book.

A.B. 6795. Hayes, who had been a member of Kane's last expedition, led this effort to extend Kane's exploration in the Smith Sound region. He was a strong believer in the "open polar sea" - that is that the Arctic Ocean was open and free of ice above latitude 80 or so. Narrative of the Hayes Arctic Exploring Expedition to extend northward the exploration of the Second Grinell Expedition and to make scientific observations and collections. It describes the voyage along the coasts of Greenland and Ellesmere Island to Smith Sound, sledge journeys to 82 degrees and the native peoples. Quantity Available: 1. All page-edges gilt. White moire silk endpapers. [iv], 360pps., with numerous woodcut illustrations and a fold-out map of Cote Occidentale du Groenland. First French Edition. There is moderate rubbing wear to the board-edges, particularly to the tips and, less significantly, in the area of the joints. Internally, there is only light foxing: most of this is in the area of the endpapers. A small, previous owner's blindstamp is impressed on the title-page and there is a label (Libreria Nacional Sevilla-Madrid) affixed to the upper corner of the second fep. The map has a 1" closed tear. Otherwise clean, bright, and tightly bound. A narrative of a ship's expedition along the coast of Greenland.
