Original Printed Wrappers. Etat : Very Good. Walter Huber, Fred Herz, T.J. Hellman, Inez Mexia, William E. Colby, Joseph Dixon, H.P. Rankin, Frank H. Lewis, Philip S. Carlton, William H. Wright, Lee L. Stopple, Quong Jue, R.L. van Oosting (illustrateur). First Edition. San Francisco: Sierra Club, 1925. First Edition. Vol XII, No. 2, for 1925. This was published during a several-year time period when the Sierra Club did not stipulate the month of an issue, just the volume, the number, and the year- monthly designations for such an infrequent publication having always been somewhat unnecessary in any case. Original printed wrappers, 9 1/4" x 6 1/4", 102 pp. + unpaginated photographic plates, features and ads, including a plate fold-out with two panoramic wide angles, from Mount Hamilton, by William H. Wright. Very Good plus, really quite close to near fine; the major flaw being the common one that circuit binding (yapp binding) was used, in which cover edges were intentionally extended out beyond page edges, but over time the extended part becomes pressed inward somewhat (see scan). One notable rear-cover chip at top, about 1" x 1.5". Otherwise, just occasional very small points of cover wear. A very handsome copy. See scans. Binding sturdy, contents fine. See scan of contents page for the lineup of stellar club writers and their always engaging and adventurous topics. In addition to the graphics mentioned above, this issue is chock full of photographic plates by the club's best photographers, as well as others. In addition to a serious passel of photos by Walter Huber and Fred Herz, there are photo contributions by T.J. Hellman, Inez Mexia, William E. Colby, Joseph Dixon, H.P. Rankin, Frank H. Lewis, Philip S. Carlton, William H. Wright, Lee L. Stopple, Quong Jue, R.L. van Oosting, and several uncredited. SC2.

1st Edition. BOUND FIRST EDITION OF THREE SIGNIFICANT PAPERS: (1) GABOR PAPER: Gabor's initial announcement of the "invention and development of the holographic method"; at that time, he called his new technology an â??electron interference microscope' (Nobel Prize; Gabor, Nature, 161, 1948, p. 778). "The first public indication of Gabor's success came with a preliminary note [this paper] to Nature [in 1948]. The following year he wrote a more complete theoretical treatment [which we offer separately] in which he introduced the word â??hologram' and indicated possible applications in light optics. Among these was the ability, using the same method, to record the data associated with 3-D objects in one interference object" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography, Sup., 17, 325). (2) BERRIMAN'S PAPER: First presentation of a "photographic emulsion which can record the track of any charged particle, regardless of its specific ionization, was achieved by [R. W.] Berriman in 1948. This marked the culmination of decisive advances" undertaken by Berriman, the chief emulsion chemist of Kodak Laboratories, Harrow, England (Creutz, Nuclear Instrumentation, 1). This important paper was the result of a charge to Berriman's Kodak laboratory by the Cabinet Advisory Committee on Atomic Energy; Kodak was charged with the development of a new series of emulsions called â??Nuclear Research Emulsions'. "The climax came in 1948 when Kodak produced the first emulsion [announced in this paper], NT4, which is sensitive to electrons at minimum ionization and thus capable of recording any charged particle of any energy" (ibid). (3) HERZ'S PAPER: [R. H.] Herz's paper, also titled "Electron Tracks in Photographic Emulsions" presents still more detail on Berriman's discovery. Herz worked alongside Berriman and the two would go on to author other papers together. Further photographs and records of electron tracks in radioactive decay are included. CONDITION & DETAILS: London: Macmillan and Son. Complete volume. 4to. (250 x 175mm). [lx], 1010, [2], 2. In-text illustrations throughout. Attractive and clean red cloth and buckram binding; slight tonal difference at the spine from spine label removal. A few scattered institutional stamps within; light. Tightly and very solidly bound. Includes original wrap from July 3, 1948 issue bound in. Title page toned with repair, otherwise bright and clean throughout.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Gabor, D.[ennis]; R.W. Berriman; and with R.H. Herz. Three significant papers, including Gabor's Nobel effort and announcement of the invention of HOLOGRAPHY. GABOR: "A New Microscopic Principle," pp .777-778. in C, 1948 (January-June), volume 16, lvi, 1028pp. The Gabor paper appears on pp 777-778 and offered in the full volume of 1028pp. Bound in stout cloth, the rear cloth board being somewhat faded. There are a few ownership rubber stamps on the interior, here and there, as well as a bookplate there are no exterior markings. A VERY GOOD copy. $500 "Gabor, assisted by Ivor Williams, began experiments at B.T.H. to establish the principle by using a purely optical model that is, using visible light instead of electrons with a mercury vapor lamp as a source of coherent light, to produce the interference photographs of simple two dimensional images. Five months later he was able to show his close confidant Lawrence Bragg his first successful wavefront reconstructions: hazy im ages of simple printed words used as objects. Even when Bragg fully understood the theory, he still stated that it was a miracle it should work. The first public indication of Gabor s success came with a preliminary note to "Nature", published on 15 May 1948. The following year he wrote a more complete theoretical treatment, for the "Proceedings of the Royal Society", in which he introduced the word hologram and indicated possible applications in light optics. Among these was the ability, using the same method, to record the data associated with 3-D objects in one interference photograph. Gabor s private correspondence was full of enthusiasm. To Max Born, he declared that his holographic reconstructions had made him happier than anything he had done in the last twenty years. And he told Arthur Koestler: I missed inventing the electron microscope when I was 27, and I have every intention to make a comeback, with a fresh start, at 48. --(Complete Dictionary of Scientific Biography online). Gabor received the Nobel Prize in 1971 "for his invention and development of the holographic method."--Nobel Prize committee. [++] Other papers in this volume include: BERRIMAN, R.W. "Electron Tracks in Photographic Emulsions," p. 432. Including an accompanying note on Berriman's paper: HERZ, R.H. "Electron Tracks in Photographic Emulsions," pp 928-929. In his abstract Herz notes "In a recent note, R. W. Berriman reported on a new photographic emulsion with which electron tracks can be recorded. Attempts have been made to relate energy and range of electron tracks in this type of photographic material, referred to as the NT2a plate. The electron tracks were obtained by exposing the plates to heavily filtered X-rays generated at increasing kilovoltages. The tracks were scanned under the microscope, and the number of grains of each track counted was plotted against the frequency of tracks. The curves so obtained show a shift of the maximum frequency towards greater numbers of grains with increasing kilo voltage. In a few cases where the tracks were at almost glancing angle to the plane of the plate, length measurements of the curved path of tracks were made."--Herz's paper, abstract.
