Leather spine shows wear with some chipping away of leather, book edges worn, rubbed; front cover appears to be reglued; fep shows penciling, flyleaves generally show some edge wear, creases. Some age-related tanning, brown spotting to text pages, margins; a few small damp spots to lower edge of legend on fine, unsigned woodcut frontispiece, back cover is loose.

The [5] at the end is a publisher's catalogue.The first edition was published in Paris,1802, by Didot. Frontispiece and title page lightly browned, pages 68, 69 and 70 with sporadic foxing, otherwise a clean copy. Contemporary full diced calf lightly rubbed, the upper and lower covers with an ornate gilt floral frame around their edges, the smooth backstrip with a red morocco title label lettered in gilt and divided into five panels by triple gilt rules with floral gilt decorations in the panels, corners bumped with a couple of boards peeping through marbled endpapers, poetical printed bookplate of Mason Wilson Ayres of Lowestoft on the front pastedown and his name and address in ink recto of the rear endpaper. This first edition in Engilsh is rare, only one copy is recorded in libraries in the United Kingdom and it is not often seen for sale. ' The publick is indebted to Mr. Hewetson for this spirited translation of a novel founded upon a well known and interesting tale. The fiction is well managed and the characters are consistent. The life of Florian is not the least valuable part of this volume ' - The Gentleman's Magazine, Vol.LXXX, July - December, 1810.
