A pictorial biography for children about the life of Asa Philip Randolph (1889-1979), born in Florida, founder of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters and a prominent African-American civil rights leader; in addition to his work on behalf of African-American workers, he was instrumental in organizing the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom (with the help of Bayard Rustin and Martin Luther King, Jr), and the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This illustrated biography of Asa Philip Randolph by Anna Beatryx Hildebrand, wife of African-American Bishop Richard Allen Hildebrand, concludes with a discussion of Randolph's appearance at the March on Washington in 1963. Anna Beatrix (Lewis) Hildebrand was the wife of African-American Bishop Richard Allen Hildebrand, who was born in Winnsboro, South Carolina (in 1916). He studied at Allen University, Payne Theological School, Boston University and earned a Doctor of Divinity from Wilberforce University. He was a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (president of New York City branch from 1962-1964). An uncommon title.
