Hardback. Etat : Good. No Jacket. First Edition. Hillam, S. A. Sheykh Hassan: The Spiritualist. A View of the Supernatural. London: W. H. Allen & Co., 1888. First edition. Octavo, pp. [i-vii] viii-ix [x-xi] xii 1-223 [224: printer's imprint]. Original smooth dark green cloth, spine panel lettered in gold, pale yellow coated endpapers, top edge rough-trimmed. Early ownership writing at top of two early pages. Cloth a bit dull and rubbed here and there, generally a good copy with a solid binding and clean interior. #376. $100. The present copy represents a possibly later issue. Another has been noted with the same text block but different binding (teal cloth with elaborate blind stamping in a faux-alligator-skin pattern, with gold lettering on front cover and spine in a different, more ornamental typeface than that used for the present copy; the layout of the type on spine also differs; finally, the presumed primary issue comes with a 48-page inserted publisher's catalogue dated December, 1887; and it is 1/4" shorter than the present issue (as the result of boards being slightly longer -- the text block is unchanged). A third issue, similar to the present copy but with blind rules on front and rear covers, is also known. It is not known which is the primary issue, but it seems reasonable to assume it would be the other, more elaborate one, not the present version. Reginald 07216. Day, The Supplemental Checklist of Fantastic Literature, p. 41. Not in Wolff. Short occult romance set in Syria based, according to the author's preface, on his personal observations. The first-person frame narrative is told by an English scholar who travels to the Levant to seek a better knowledge of Arabic -- and of occult mysteries. The novel is told throughout with convincing local color. The bulk of the book is taken up with intercalated stories (in proper Arabian Nights fashion) related by his teacher, Hassan, whose life has been a story of love, betrayal and monastic retreat. He has acquired great occult powers, including the ability to raise the dead. The climactic conjuration scene, in which bones rain down from the sky, can hold its own for razzle-dazzle with any other similar scenes. The ending flinches from the expected note of tragedy, but Hillam's novel still deserves a place of respect among the better-than-average genre works of this period.
