2023 N&M Press reprint (original pub 1909). 120 pages with 8 multi page colour maps While the Japanese Army settled down in front of Port Arthur for a siege, a large force under Field Marshal Oyama moved north to secure the strategically located rail junction of Liaoyang, on the Mukdenâ "Port Arthur spur of the China Far East Railway, in Manchuria. The battle began on 25 August 1904, with the 158,000 strong Russian armies attempting to turn the flanks of the Japanese First, Second and Third Armies totalling 125,000 men.On 26 August 1904, the Japanese First Army took Kosarei Peak and Hung-sha Pass southeast of Liaoyang city after a hard-fought action. General Aleksey Kuropatkin, commander-in-chief of the Russian armies, believed that he had been beaten and withdrew from the outer Russian defence line, with the Japanese in pursuit. From 29â "30 August 1904, the Russian troops managed to repel intense Japanese assaults on the main defence lines south of Liaoyang. By 31 August 1904, the Japanese First Army was crossing the river northeast of Liaoyang. On 4 September 1904, after a few days of ineffectual counterattacks, Kuropatkin decided to evacuate Liaoyang for Mukden in the early morning. The unfortunate city was then sacked in succession by Russian, Chinese and Japanese forces. The Russian armies suffered about 15,548 casualties (2,007 KIA, 1,448 MIA, 12,093 WIA). However, despite the greater Japanese casualties (23,615 killed, wounded or captured), the Japanese were able to claim victory since the Russians quit the battlefield. The dearly won Japanese victory at Liaoyang and the fall of Port Arthur shortly thereafter contributed to the major Russian defeat the next year at the Battle of Mukden.

2023 N&M Press reprint (original pub 1908). 164 pages with 12 multi page colour maps The Battle of Liao Yang (25 August â " 3 September 1904) was the first major land battle of the war, on the outskirts of the city of Liao Yang. The city was of great strategic importance as the major Russian military centre for southern Manchuria, and a major population centre on the main line on the Russian South Manchurian Railway connecting Port Arthur with Mukden. The city was fortified by the Imperial Russian Army with three lines of fortifications.Despite General Oku Yasukataâ s goal of encircling and annihilating the Russian forces in Manchuria at Liao Yang, Kuropatkin was able to retreat in good order as the exhausted Japanese were unable to pursue. On 7 September, General Aleksey Kuropatkin informed St Petersburg that he had won a great victory over the Japanese by avoiding encirclement and inflicting great losses. However, Russian War Minister Viktor Sakharov ridiculed the report.

2023 N&M Press reprint (original pub 1910). 183 pages with 11 multi page colour maps The fifth and final volume in this Official History covers the Battle of Shaho â " this was the second and last large-scale land battle of 1904, fought along a 37-mile front centred at the Shaho River along the Mukdenâ "Port Arthur spur of the China Far East Railway north of Liaoyang, Manchuria. On 5 October 1904, the Russian armies, totalling 210,000 men, attacked in a general offensive north of Liaoyang, with the main advance coming through the mountains to the east. The Russian attacks on the left flank slowly gained ground as Russian forces wrested the initiative from the Japanese. The Japanese forces consisted of the 1st Army commanded by General Kuroki Tametomo, the 2nd Army commanded by General Oku Yasukata, and the 4th Army commanded by General Nozu Michitsura, totalling 170,000 men. On the evening of 10 October 1904, General Oyama ordered a major Japanese counter-offensive to strike the Russian right flank. By 13 October, the Japanese halted the Russian advance in the mountains to the northeast of Liaoyang and threatened the Russian centre south of the Sha River.Combat continued for the next four days, with both sides unwilling to back down. It was not until 17 October 1904 that General Kuropatkin called off the costly attacks and withdrew his forces north towards Mukden. After two weeks of fighting, the battle ended inconclusively. Despite opportunities created with the opening of the Trans-Siberian Railway, Kuropatkin was unwilling to carry on regardless of casualties, and pulled back towards Mukden. The battle ended in a draw, as the Japanese were unable to take advantage of the pause in the action.Russian casualties totalled 44,351 killed, wounded, captured or missing in action. Japanese casualties totalled 20,345 killed, wounded, captured or missing. As a result, the Japanese advance on Mukden was paused, but not halted, and both sides dug in to prepare for the next battle at the Battle of Sandepu.

2013 N&M Press reprint (original pub c1938). SB. xvi+845pp.Published Price £65 Many historians attribute the seemingly sudden collapse of Germany and her Central Powers allies in 1918, not to defeats on the battlefields of the western front, but to the disastrous cumulative effects of the British blockade of Germanyâ s ports and coastline. This massive volume - kept strictly secret until as recently as 1960 - is the official history of the blockade that brought the Kaiserâ s proud Reich to its knees. Germany, hoping to knock out France and end the war in weeks, was ill prepared for a long conflict in which economic factors would come to play a decisive role. Totally dependent on the import of food and raw materials, Germany was supremely vulnerable to the Royal Navy choking off its lifelines. After the Battle of Jutland in 1916 had confined Germanyâ s High Seas Fleet to port, the tightening blockade became ever more effective, progressively causing the regulation of food prices, rationing, and finally the dreadful â Turnip Winterâ of 1917 in which its hungry population was reduced to eating the eponymous vegetable, and brewing ersatz coffee from acorns. 750,000 Germans starved to death, and the collapse in civilian morale led to social revolution, mutinies in the Fleet and Army, and finally to Germany sueing for armistice terms. As we mark the centenary of the war, this previously restricted and hugely detailed record is of crucial importance to our understanding one of of the vital factors that finally brought Allied victory.
