Ephemera. Three items stapled together: An 8.5x11 inch cover letter by Arthur Upham Pope and Lyman R. Bradley, a single-sheet petition to mail to the governor of Texas, and the 7-page Memorandum. Cover letter has "Rainey Academic Freedom Case" written across the top in red pencil, other items very good. Rainey, the president of the University of Texas, had resisted pressure to fire economics professors who espoused New Deal views, and the regents were also angry because he opposed their efforts to fire an English professor who had put John Dos Passos's "subversive" novel "The Big Money" on the English department's sophomore reading list. Rainey's refusal to participate in what he perceived as witch-hunts led to his firing in November 1944. These items are from the following month.
