Hardcover. Etat : Good. This Book is "My Home in the field of Mercy" by Frances Wilson Huard, who was an American woman who married a Frenchman, Charles Huard. The two of them maintained a lovely country home about an hour from Paris near the Marne river. Huard is now a collected artist; at the time of the First World War he was commissioned by the French government to draw and paint military scenes to illustrate the part French troops played in the war. ************************************** To do that he had been called to the front. His wife was left behind in their home, which she soon had to abandon, fleeing across the French countryside and through towns, as the German army used the house as a regional headquarters. It was a frightening time, but Mrs. Huard survived and this book is part of the the story of her adventures and struggle, as recounted in her own words, as she assisted as well as she could as a nurse, treating the physically and psychologically damaged men, some of whom survived . and too many of which did not. ************************************** The book is illustrated with 4 handsome pencil drawings by her husband (Including Frontispiece). This is the Grosset and Dunlap reprint that was issued circa 1920. The plate illustrations are presented on calendered paper which are free of marking or writing on the reverse side, were done with a deft, light touch, and many of them seem almost dream-like, or as if viewed through a haze of smoke or mist. ************************************ TITLE : My Home in the Field of Mercy / AUTHOR : Frances Wilson Huard (1885 - 1969) / ILLUSTRATOR : Charles Huard (1874 - 1965) / IMPRINT : Grosset and Dunlap / PLACE : New York / DATE : (circa 1920) / EDITION : Reprint / PHYSICAL DETAILS : Trade hardcover; contains 4 plate illustrations including frontispiece); 269 pages; pale orange cloth-covered binding with black lettering on spine and front board. *********************************** CONDITION - GOOD ONLY - This is a previously owned book which remains clean and attractive, with the following imperfections and particulars noted: EXTERIOR -- Spine extremities are compressed and display abrasion; spine lettering displays nicely; board corner tip softly bumped; there is a tiny section of the front joint that has a bit of cloth loss; same to the rear joint, which also displays thinning (erosion) of cloth; else the boards are clean with good color. Text-block edges are toned with general wear showing, and the fore-edge is foxed. / BINDING -- The book has obviously been read and thus not as tight as when issued, the text-block being just slightly shaken, but no leaves are detached or loose. / INTERIOR -- The paper is slightly toned throughout, but clean and unmarked. A few of the leaves are slightly torn or nicked -or chipped along the edges (nothing egregious. Some of the type face is irregular. No writing, no marking. No signatures. / JACKET -- Sans dust- jacket.
Paris, Albin Michel, (1928). (in Bénézit). (in 5.000 dessinateurs de presse).
