Octavo, pp. [1-8] [1-3] 4-205 [206: printer's colophon] [207-215: publisher's ads] [216: blank] [note: first leaf is a blank], conjoined frontispiece and vignette title leaf and plate facing page 149 are inserts, original decorated gray-green cloth, front panel stamped in blind, spine panel stamped in gold, top edge stained green. First edition. 2500 copies printed. Contains two pieces of fiction, the first of novella length, the second a novelette. Both have borderline supernatural aspects that are brought out more clearly in an appendix in which the author comments on the origin of the stories. The first is a historical fiction set in the early days of the English monarchy, revealed to the author, he claims, by a vision of its heroine. "An Old Thorn" is about a "wishing-tree," which has the power of rewarding its friends and punishing its enemies. Intercalated among the author's comments is a nice little one-page ghost story. Payne A39a. NCBEL III 1060. Spine lettering a bit dulled, still a bright, near fine copy. (#117667).

Octavo, pp. [1-8] [1] 2-182 [183-184: blank] [note: last leaf is a blank], original pictorial green wrappers printed in black. First edition. 3210 copies printed, of which this is one of 1250 paperbound copies issued as number 2 of "Duckworth's Greenback Library." Collects the short title novel, three short stories, and "Appendix to El Ombu." One of the stories, "Marta Riquelme," is of particular interest as a possible seed for Hudson's most famous work, GREEN MANSIONS (1904), a lost-race fantasy about a woman who understands the language of birds; the story "is based on a legend in which those who suffer too deeply in their lives experience a transformation, becoming birds." - Clute and Grant (eds), The Encyclopedia of Fantasy (1997), p. 485. Payne A21a. Sadleir 1231. NCBEL III 1059. Spine panel and edges of rear panel sunned, wear at spine ends and along spine folds, early repairs to several spine tears, a good copy of a somewhat fragile item. (#117665).

FIRST EDITION. Title and half-title in red and black. Original green cloth binding illustrating birds on branches on front cover; front and back free endpapers chipped along edges with offsetting on half-title and last page. Generally, the interior is excellent, with a blind ownership stamp (W.H. Smith) on first free endpaper. First edition of Hudson's delightful account of the birds found in a village in southeast England. He compares the species and population as well as the treatment against those that would cause damage to their food and habitat. Hudson (1841-1922), author, naturalist and ornithologist, was a founding member of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. He is best known for his novel Green Mansion. Hemingway famously referred to Hudson's book The Purple Land in his novel The Sun Also Rises.
