Hardcover. Etat : Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Spine is slanted a noticeable half-inch (1.5 cm.) Gilt titles and devices remain strong to front board and spine. Original black endpapers are in lovely condition but show white at the junctures from over-opening. No printing stated, which likely means this is the first. Tale of a quest for the supposed sacred stone of the Aztecs. English-born Fergus Hume (Fergusson Wright Hume, 1859-1932) was taken to New Zealand as a child, and was admitted to the New Zealand bar in 1885. Shortly after graduation Hume relocated to Melbourne, Australia, where he obtained a job as a barrister's clerk. He began writing plays, but found it impossible to persuade the managers of Melbourne theaters to accept or even to read them. Advised by a newsstand dealer that the novels of Emile Gaboriau (L'Affaire Lerouge / The Widow Lerouge, 1866; Le Dossier No. 113 / File No. 113, 1867) were very popular in Melbourne, Hume obtained and read 11 of them and determined to write a novel of the same kind. The result was "The Mystery of a Hansom Cab," set in Melbourne, with descriptions of the life of the urban poor based on his knowledge of Little Bourke Street. He self-published in 1886 and the little paperback became a great success. Because he sold the British and American rights for 50 pounds, however, he reaped little of the financial benefit of what became the best-selling mystery novel of the Victorian era. The novel inspired Arthur Conan Doyle to write "A Study in Scarlet," in which he introduced the legendary Dr. John H. Watson and his pale and lanky sidekick, Sherlock What's-His-Name. Doyle remarked, "Hansom Cab was a slight tale, mostly sold by 'puffing.'" After the publication of his second novel, "Professor Brankel's Secret," Hume returned to England in 1888. His third novel, "Madame Midas," was based on the life of mine and newspaper mogul Alice Ann Cornwell. It was adapted for the stage, whereupon her estranged husband, John Whiteman, sued over its content. Hume resided in London for a few years and then moved to the Essex countryside, where he lived at Thundersley for 30 years. Eventually he produced more than 100 novels (of which this would appear to be the 20th) and short stories. Though highly popular at the time, most of his works now prove oddly difficult to obtain. This copy reportedly from the collection of fantasy illustrator Henry M. Eichner (1909-1971), author of the non-fiction Atlantis book "Atlantean Chronicles," though it bears no ownership markings. 441 pp. followed by 3 pp. publishers ads, primarily for "New and Cheaper Editions of Standard Fiction." Here reduced from $220.

Octavo, pp. [1-10] 11-191 [192: blank], eight inserted plates with illustrations in color by Maria L. Kirk, black and white illustrations in the text by M. Dunlop, title page printed in red and black, original pictorial green cloth, front panel stamped in white, black and gold, spine panel stamped in gold, t.e.g., pictorial endpapers. First edition with the Kirk illustrations. Seven modern fairy tales discovered in King Oberon's library during a visit to Faeryland plus the related "The Enchanted Forest." The stories are "unremarkable" according to Clute and Grant (1997), and they are didactic too. Despite the title, a collection of moral fables for children, not adults. Blackford, et al., Strange Constellations: A History of Australian Science Fiction, p. 226. Clute and Grant (eds), The Encyclopedia of Fantasy (1997), p. 486. Larnach, Materials Towards a Checklist of Australian Fantasy to 1937 (1950), p. 13. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978) or Reginald (1979; 1992). Bookplate affixed to front free endpaper. Binding rubbed at spine ends and corner tips, white enamel stamping on front cover mostly perished, a very good, tight and internally clean copy. (#138889).
