The editor was Professor of American Literature in the University of Leeds between 1969 & 1983. // The author originally wrote this in 1850 at the age of 64. He was an important and energetic, though frequently impoverished, man of letters. It is justly celebrated for its accounts of Hunt's experience as an eighteenth-century pupil at Christ's Hospital (which can be compared to those of Coleridge and Hunt's friend Charles Lamb). / This is a 'cloth-bound' 1st edition hardback in good condition-the cloth to the cover is a little marked. (512 pages & 28 pages of introduction). Originally written in 1850.

Undated, but ca 1890; the title page places the publisher's office at 24 Warwick Lane, which was their address in the years from 1885-1894, and there is a bookplate at front paste down indicating the book as a class prize in October of 1890. 288 pages. Brown cloth with black titles and decoration, and with the titles in a gilt window. Cloth lightly age-soiled, edgeworn, a little dulled and faded to spine. Binding cracked slightly preceding title page and at rear inner hinge, but intact, and is sound through textblock. Prior owner's name stamped to title page and to verso of RFEP. Text clean and unmarked. An attractive volume. Size: 24mo - over 5' - 5 3/4 in tall.
