M. Trenchard. The Squadron was formed at Hounslow in September, 1915, and became one of the earliest night flying units in the RFC. The Squadron flew their DH2 scouts to France to become the first scout squadron of the RFC to proceed as a unit to any battle front. The C.O. was Maj. Lanoe Hawker. The Squadron also flew DH5 and SE5 airplanes. They were in the thick of battle from 1916 until the Armistice. A scarce and important volume that includes victory logs, honors, decorations, and a roster of officers and men. Illustrated in full color after paintings by Captain R. H. M. S. Saundby M.C. This title is customarily seen in quarter dark blue calf and blue cloth stamped in the same manner as this copy. This copy does not have a limitation number - perhaps this less expensive binding was produced for enlisted personnel? With the bookplate of aviation collector, Alvin J. Kropff.
