The 1920 edition of The Ingoldsby Legends illustrated by Arthur Rackham is a lavish, highly collectible volume combining Richard Harris Barham's comic?gothic tales with some of Rackham's most atmospheric Golden Age illustrations. It is prized today for its craftsmanship, its place in Rackham's career, and its distinctive blend of humour, folklore, and the supernatural. The Ingoldsby Legends is a collection of humorous, often macabre stories and poems written by Richard Harris Barham under the pen name Thomas Ingoldsby. The tales draw on English folklore, medieval legends, ghost stories, and satirical verse. They were originally published in the 1840s and became a Victorian favourite. The 1920 Rackham?illustrated edition is one of the most celebrated illustrated versions, produced during the tail end of the Golden Age of Illustration. Ref PPP 2.

Leather. Etat : Near Fine. Arthur Rackham (illustrateur). Illustrated in colour by Arthur Rackham, and in a signed full calf Bayntun-Riviere binding, this is a beautiful example of this anthology of myths and legends. A beautiful edition of this anthology of myths and legends, in a full calf signed Bayntun-Riviere binding, and featuring the colour illustrations of renowned artist Arthur Rackham.Illustrated with numerous vignette illustrations, a colour frontispiece and eleven further full colour plates, all the work of leading figure of Golden Age of British book illustration, Arthur Rackham. Collated, complete. This is a collection of whimsical legends, myths, and ghost stories written supposedly by Thomas Ingoldsby of Tappington Manor, actually the pen-name of clergyman Richard Harris Barham. The legends were first printed in 1837 as a regular series in magazine 'Bentley's Miscellany', and due to their popularity were compiled and published in book form. Although based on real legends and mythology, they are deliberately humorous parodies of medieval folklore and poetry. From the library of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie, an extravagant socialite and renowned beauty of the Edwardian period. Impeccably connected, Pleydell-Bouverie was also the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII, and rumoured to be a lover of King Edward VIII. A sparkling figure of fashionable society, her friends included Nancy Mitford, Coco Chanel, Winston Churchill, and Fred Astaire. This work is from the sale of Pleydell-Bouverie"s library at Julians Park, Hertfordshire. She purchased the home in 1940, redesigning the interior and amassing an impressive library, featuring many examples of her own bookbinding. In a full calf signed binding, with gilt detailing. Externally, lovely. Rubbing to front joint, with board holding firm. Binder's stamp to verso of front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright. Near Fine. book.

Hardcover. Etat : Near fine. Etat de la jaquette : very good +. Rackham, Arthur (illustrateur). First Edition. First trade edition with additional Rackham illustrations on enlarged paper, quarto size, 568 pp., in original dust jacket. This book was first published in 1898 with only twelve illustrations, this being the first trade edition of the newly enlarged version of 1907, which had many new illustrations. British illustrator Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) is credited with renewing interest in book illustration at a vital moment of advances in printing technology. The subtle colours and thin feral lines were unlike anything that had come before, as if plucked from the fog of a wild imagination, breathing new life into the whole of children's book illustration. The somewhat grotesque quality of Rackham's figures are perfectly suited for the metrical myths, legends, and ghost stories written by Richard Harris Barham (1788-1845), an English clergyman who is best known by his pen name Thomas Ingoldsby. ___DESCRIPTION: Publisher's olive-green buckram with gilt pictorial stamping and lettering to the front and spine, top-edge gilt, fore- and tail-edges uncut, illustrated olive endpapers, title in red and olive-green within pictorial border, richly illustrated with twenty-four colour plates mounted on heavy olive paper with captioned tissue guards, twelve full-page tinted illustrations, and sixty-six drawings within the text; quarto size (10 1/8" by 7 7/8"), pagination: [i-viii] ix-xix 1-549, reprint of the 1898 edition on enlarged paper with additional illustrations, first trade thus. With the scarce original brown dust jacket printed in dark-green, the front panel with an upper banner and lettering which mirror the binding, price on spine of 15/- net, back panel with publisher's ad for "Some Acceptable Presents" which includes Palgrave's "Golden Treasury" illustrated by R. Anning Bell and two others, both flaps blank. ___CONDITION: A near fine copy, the cloth binding clean, the gilt on both front and spine bright and unrubbed, the corners straight with a faint hint of rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, internally bright and free of prior owner markings, the plates all present as called for; foxing limited to a couple of faint spots on the title-page, minor slight shelf wear at edges (none so much as to cause fraying to the cloth), overall a near fine copy. The dust jacket is quite uncommon and suffers only from some minor chipping to joints and corners (with old prior owner tape repair to these on verso), none obscuring the text, overall very bright and clean; very good. ___CITATION: Latimore and Haskell, p. 30; Riall, p. 83. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. The Second and Best Trade Edition [RACKHAM, Arthur, illustrator]. INGOLDSBY, Thomas (pseud. of Richard Harris Barham). The Ingoldsby Legends. Illustrated by Arthur Rackham A.R.W.S. London: J.M. Dent & Co.,1907. Second (and best) trade edition. Large quarto (9 7/8 x 7 5/8 inches; 251 x 193 mm.). Twenty-four color plates tipped-in on brown stock with captioned tissue guards, twelve tinted plates, and sixty-six drawings in black and white. Publisher's olive green cloth, front cover and spine stamped in gilt, pictorial endpapers, tope edge gilt, others uncut. Armorial bookplate on front paste down. Scattered insect damage to boards, but not through cloth. A good copy only. "In 1898 Messrs. Dent and Co. first published 'The Ingoldsby Legends,' with about one hundred illustrations of mine. This book has met with a very satisfactory reception, but the publisher's have felt with me that, with the addition of new drawings, a careful overhauling would make it worthy of publication in a more important form, in which greater prominence could be given to the illustrations by better and larger reproductions, including a greater number of illustrations in colour. "To this end the following has been done: "The frontispiece and the coloured illustration facing page 508 have been specially drawn, and all the other illustrations in colour have been worked on to a considerable extent, and specially coloured for this edition. A few illustrations in the earlier edition have been omitted and in their place have been added those facing page 254 and on pages vi, 25, 37, 316, 320, and 333. "Many of the pen drawings have been reconsidered and worked on again - those which have been worked on to any great extent being now signed with both dates, 1898 and 1907. Of the rest, reproductions on a larger scale have been made in all but a few cases, and the text has been revised and entirely reset for this edition' (Rackham, Prefatory Note). Latimore and Haskell, pp. 30-31. Riall, p. 83.

Etat de la jaquette : dj. Second (and best) trade edition. Large quarto. Original green cloth stamped in gilt. Pictorial endpapers. Mild wear, spine mildly sunned, but still an excellent copy in a later tan pictorial dust jacket printed in black. Twenty-four color plates tipped-in on brown stock with captioned tissue guards, twelve tinted plates, and sixty-six drawings in black and white. With the bookplate of Maude M. Monell on front paste-down. Written under the nom-de-plume of clergyman Richard Harris Barham, The Ingoldsby Legends was a collection of myths and ghost stories that blended humor with the grotesque. Largely composed in rhyme, the stories emphasize figures such as saints and gods; and they were published to delight a Victorian audience increasingly interested in sensationalist gothic literature. Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) is perhaps the most acclaimed and influential illustrators of the Golden Age of Illustration. A prolific artist even from his youth, Rackham got his start as an illustrator working for the Westminster Budget Newspaper (1892). Over the next few years, he took on more and more commissions for children's books, hitting his career high in the first three decades of the twentieth century. Rackham turned his imaginative pen to every classic-from Shakespeare to Dickens to Poe. Latimore and Haskell 30-31. Riall 83.

Signed limited edition, number 377 of 560 copies signed by Rackham, one of 500 for sale in England. Rackham's previous illustrated edition of The Ingoldsby Legends, published in 1898, had no deluxe signed issue. For this edition, it was revised and largely redrawn, so that "greater prominence could be given to the illustrations by better and larger reproductions, including a greater number of illustrations in colour" (Prefatory Note). These popular tales, which were purportedly based on the author's discovery of old documents, were in fact mostly reworkings of known narrative sources such as Kentish myth and Sir Walter Scott. Thomas Ingoldsby was the pseudonym of Richard Harris Barham (1788-1845), whose "knowledge of such areas as heraldry and witchcraft also lends a degree of authenticity to the Legends" (ODNB). Initially appearing in the serial Bentley's Miscellany in 1837, the tales were first published in book form in 1840 and inspired numerous illustrators. Latimore & Haskell, pp. 30-31; Riall, p. 83. Quarto (271 x 212 mm). Colour frontispiece and 23 colour plates mounted on green paper with captioned tissue guards, black and white illustrations in the text, by Rackham. Contemporary red morocco, spine lettered in gilt, double gilt rule to covers, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Presentation inscription to initial binder's blank "Henry Bradshaw-Isherwood given me by the Lady Newton Nov. 21. 1907"; neat pencilled note of acquisition to rear binder's blank dated 1924. Morocco a little dulled, very light toning to contents, light marking to initial few pages, a few tissue-guards and plates a little creased. A very good copy.
