Original half red morocco over rose cloth, spines lettered in gilt with elaborately gilt decorated compartments. Top edges gilt. This set is Illustrated with over 150 steel and copper plate engravings, printed on India Paper, mounted on leaves of heavy paper stock. Each plate has a tissue guard printed in red. Each title page is printed in red & black and with a copper engraved vignette. This deluxe edition is limited to 1,000 numbered sets (this being #46). Some of the outer hinges and spine extremities are lightly rubbed, and the outer front hinge of Vol. X is cracked but holding soundly. All in all, a very attractive set. Note: "This edition of the life and works of Hogarth is edited from the texts by John Nichols, F.A.S., George Steevens, F.R.S. and Samuel Ireland, with a new critical introduction by John La Farge . and a chronological catalogue raisonné by Austin Dobson. The steel and copper plate impressions are from the engravings by Armstrong, Cook, Engleheart, Holl, Mottram Radclyffe, Romney, etc.".
