Cloth. Etat : Very Good. First Edition. First Edition. [2], 1392 pages. Light brown buckram binding with gilt spine lettering. We offer the entire volume, Physical Review 106 Apr-June 1957. Ex-library, properly withdrawn, with minor markings. Cloth. This volume contains the article "Microscopic Theory of Superconductivity" found on pages 162-164 by Bardeen, Cooper, and Schrieffer who won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1972 "for their jointly developed theory of superconductivity, usually called the BCS-theory". This article was the first major published piece related to the theory, which was later discussed in more detail in their major and most important paper on the subject "Theory of Superconductivity" which appeared in the next volume of the journal.

Edition originale
Lancaster, PA, 1957. The complete issue in original blue printed wrappers. A fine copy, with no tears, stamps or fading. First edition of this historic paper. The phenomenon of low-temperature superconductivity was discovered by the Dutch physicist Kamerling Onnes already in 1911. For nearly half a century this peculiar phenomenon remained a mystery. The B(ardeen)C(ooper)S(schrieffer)-theory was first announced in this issue of the Physical Review. The theory turned out to be very successful in explaining in considerable detail the properties of superconductors. The theory also predicted new effects and stimulated an intensive activity in theoretical and experimental research. In 1972 the authors shared the Nobel Prize in Physics "for their jointly developed theory of superconductivity, usually called the BCS-theory". This was Bardeen's second Nobel Prize in Physics (1956 for the co-invention of the transistor) - until today only two scientists have received the prize twice in the same field. The importance of this paper is still today of the greatest magnitude, as it has been one of the most cited articles in the last decade.

Soft cover. Etat : Fine. 1st Edition. FIRST PRINTING in original wrappers of arguably the most important paper in the field of superconductivity. The key ideas of the theory were announced in two short letters in two separate issues of The Physical Review before the full developed theory was published in December, 1957. The issues with the original letters are also included in the original wrappers, making this a scarce complete set of the full published account of one of the defining moments in modern physics. "The basis for all later theoretical work in superconductivity" (Britannica). IN: The Physical Review, Second Series, Vol. 108, No. 5, p.1175-1204. Lancaster, PA, 1957. The complete issue in original blue printed wrappers. WITH: The Physical Review, Second Series, Vol. 104, No. 4 and Vol. 106, No.1, both in original wrappers. Custom half-leather box. In exceptional condition with only very light wear to wrappers. Provenance: from the library of the Danish physicist Christian MÃ ller (the author of "The Theory of Relativity"), with his name written in hand on the front wrapper.
