Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. [iv], xv, 510, [1] pp. + 8 pp. Auguste Fontaine bookseller catalogue; thick 8vo, quarter burgundy morocco, marbled paper sides and endpapers, five raised bands, gilt title in second compartment, half title; original upper wrapper panel tipped in, engraved frontispiece portrait, t.e.g. The upper wrapper has been mounted on a tipped-in stub. French novelist and writer Nicolas Edmé Restif de la Bretonne (1735-1806) published more than fifty works, some rather racy, over a thirty-five year span. In addition to his literary output, Restif also dealt with some social aspects of pre-Revolution France, including a philosophical work on prostitution reform. A lengthy historical and critical essay by Lacroix is followed by the bibliography, which describes and discusses in detail fifty-six of Restif's works plus several attributed to him. This is copy no. 446 of an edition of 500 copies printed on papier Hollande (fifty more were printed on Whatman paper). An attractive, near fine copy overall; mounted wrapper age-toned, with some loss at the gutter, its verso with contemporary (unnamed) bookplate and remnant of a small bookseller label; cover edges lightly rubbed and mild offsetting from portrait onto title page.
