Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. Bang, Jette; P.V. Glob et al (illustrateur). 1st Edition. Original illustrated brown cloth in colour illustrated jacket 25 x 30cm. Translated from the original Danish by Geoffrey Bibby and Peter Crawford. 399pp illustrated in colour and b/w. Covers fine, interiors mostly fine with some corners creased towards the end, and previous owner's bookplate to front endpaper. Jacket very good, creased along the edges with price sticker residue to the back, and creasing to the back flap. Publisher's description: "The al-Naim and al-Murrah Bedouins are two different groups of nomadic peoples in modern Qatar. The al-Naim lived an almost stationary existence by the seacoast of northern Qatar, often moving by boat and engaging in pearl fishing. In complete contrast, the al-Murrah of South Qatar traversed the vast and sandy reaches of southern Arabia on camelback. This book is a product of The Carlsberg Foundation Nomad Research Project, which draws on the rich Middle Eastern and Central Asian ethnographic collections of the National Museum of Denmark, as well as on recent social and cultural anthropological studies of nomadic groups in Afghanistan, the Persian Gulf and North Africa. This volume incorporates fieldwork carried out amongst the Qatari Bedouins in 1959, just before their lives were radically altered by a rapid expansion of the oil industry. Its chief focus is on everyday life and adaptations to the natural and social environment as well as on these groups' material culture, especially the structure and function of the tent. A richly illustrated catalogue of artifacts is supplemented by a unique collection of photographs which document the lives of both groups during winter and spring. A record of fast disappearing customs and folk arts, "Bedouins of Qatar" also offers a striking example of a fragile way of life whose traditions may soon be lost under the pressures of development." Chapters cover field work and aims; Qatar and its inhabitants; nature and climate; the Bedouins of Qatar; camp, tents and daily activities; the tent as construction; the summer house and its construction among Al Na'im; cultural life; material culture and a catalogue of collected arteifacts; the Shaykhs and their desert camps; with pictorial appendix, bibliography and index.

Hardcover. Etat : New. Bang, Jette; Klaus Ferdinand (illustrateur). "A unique collection depicting Bedouin life in Qatar during the years just before the oil economy dramatically changed this traditional form of livelihood" (p3). Original colour illustrated paper covered boards 23x30cm. (2), 145pp illustrated throughout in colour and b/w, with Preface by QMA Chair Al Mayassa Bint Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, introduction, and captions in English and Arabic. New in publisher's shrinkwrap. With contact already established through the archaeological work initiated by PV Glob and Geoffrey Bibby, Danish photographer Jette Bang (1914-64) and ethnographer Klaus Ferdinand (1926-2005) were able to spend two and a half months with Qatari Bedouin. They focused on two groups. The Al-Na'im maintained sheep and goats and covered relatively short distances within Qatar relying on motor vehicles. In contrast, the Al-Murrah only raised camels (their own, and those belonging to the Rulers of Qatar) and migrated much further afield. The photos, selected from Moesgard Museum's collection of over 2,200 images, are arranged into themes of the expedition; Dohah and al-Rayyan; North Qatar - among Al-Na'im; and South Qatar - among Al-Murrah.
