Compartments and boarders of the boards are ruled in gilt, and the spine titles are in gilt. All edges red. The binding is rubbed, especially along the hinges and shows some old stains, especially at the fore edges and the top edge. The red edges of the text block are rubbed and show pale spotting. An ex-library copy with white shelf numbers partially rubbed off at the foot of the spine. Removed label from the front flyleaf shows some paper residue. The text block is sound, and the text is a little toned but generally clean. Scarce.

Edition originale
Hardcover. Etat : Good. 1st Edition. Octavo, contemporary cittron half morocco, rubbed, joints lightly cracked, spine gilt, added engraved frontispiece portrait of Southey (this work was issued without a frontispiece) at front, good. This is one of the most difficult books to find in the entire Southey canon, either in the first edition or the second edition. We've handled one copy of the second edition in the past forty years; this is the second copy of the first edition we have handled in that same amount of time. Simmons Southey, 46. First edition. Very rare.
