Edition originale
First edition of this detailed and attractive journal-form account of a trip to these "almost unknown islands", now much valued for its anthropological content. Bookplate of collector Robert J. Hayhurst to volume I, the set typical of his eye for sharp condition. Brothers Joseph and Henry Bullar were two of the sons of prominent Southampton schoolmaster, abolitionist and campaigner for civic improvement John Bullar (1778-1864). Joseph (1808-1869), the principal author of the present work, was a doctor and with his brother William was largely responsible for the founding of the Royal South Hampshire Hospital in 1846. Joseph was the invalid "in search of a warm and equable climate" who provided motive for the brothers' eight-month sojourn in the North Atlantic. Henry (1815-70) was a barrister who enjoyed a successful career on the Western Circuit; his friendship with Wilkie Collins, which began when they were at Lincoln's Inn together, had introduced him to "the intellectual, literary and artistic circle of which Wilkie was the epicentre - the painters John Everett Millais, William Holman Hunt, Augustus Egg and Wilkie's brother Charles Allston Collins; the lawyer and journalist Edward Pigott (proprietor and editor of the radical newspaper The Leader); the poet Edward Lear; and Charles Dickens" (Sotonopedia). The appealing frontispieces are after sketches by Henry. Although The Morning Post was scathing, describing the present work as "two tedious tomes of everything and nothing" (17 July 1841), later readers have seen considerable merit. Joseph's dual perspective as the doctor-invalid suffuses the narrative "the precise, scientific language of a doctor, with a remarkable capacity for objective enquiry and observation; and the subjective, reflective, romantically inspired discourse of the invalid who finds solace in the beauties of the natural world. The appeal of the work may in part be attributed to this duality of approach and richness of expression" (Mundell Callado, pp. 234-5) While the text includes painstaking descriptions of the scenery and inhabitants, including dress and customs, and an extensive appendix detailing the climate of São Miguel, prevalent diseases, with meticulous chemical analyses of the springs at Furnas and 14 pages of meteorological tables, throughout a "tendency to reflection and contemplation emerges [when] describing the scenery and natural beauty of the islands" (p. 240). At these times "the language acquires an almost lyrical quality, characteristic of the Romantic school. In fact there are numerous citations from the works of Romantic writers" signalling Bullar's close identification with the literature. In all a most unusual account, but very much of its time; the text balancing scientific and philosophical concerns in a deeply personal way, and this present copy surviving in such condition as to endorse the faith of Van Voorst, perhaps London's leading scientific publisher at the time, in the allure of such highly finished productions. Abbey Travel 72. Kathleen J. Mundell Callado, "Prescription, Description: a Doctor-Invalid and his Brother explore the Azores", Arquipélago, special history number, Universidade dos Açores, 1988. Two volumes octavo. Original very dark bluish green vertically combed cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine, elaborate panels in blind to the boards, brilliant greenish yellow surface-paper endpapers. Hand-coloured lithographic frontispiece to each, engraved title-page vignettes, numerous similar illustrations to the text. Spines a touch sunned and just a little crumpled head and tail, very lightly rubbed and a small, almost imperceptible splash mark to the front board of volume II, otherwise an extremely bright, tight, and clean set, internally and externally.
