Kennedy served with valor in WW II and the Korean War, he later became COMMANDER of the aircraft carrier USS Leyte CVS32 (Essex Class Aircraft Carrrier) 1/16/1959 5/15/1959 KENNEDY, COMMANDER JEFFERSON JR. - (U.S. Navy, Ret.) of Margate, died at his home on Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at the age of 94. Kennedy was born December 4, 1917 to Jefferson Kennedy, Sr., a prominent businessman, and Jimmye de Lashmet Kennedy in Chicago, and attended Westminster School for Boys in Connecticut, and Rollins College in Florida. He came from a distinguished military family. He was descended from the youngest of four brothers all of whom fought in the Confederate cavalry and, except for his grandfather, died in the Civil War. Early in 1940, realizing that war was highly probable, he joined the US Navy as an aviation cadet, and was commissioned an Ensign in the US Naval Reserve a year before Pearl Harbor, having qualified as an aircraft carrier pilot. After commissioning, he served as an instructor. Following the outbreak of war at Pearl Harbor he was assigned to squadron VFB 16 which was a fighter bomber squadron based on the aircraft carrier USS Lexington, then based in San Diego. Kennedy served with valor in WW II and the Korean War, receiving ten medals for bravery, including five Air Medals, three Distinguished Flying Crosses, and the Purple Heart. During his naval career he commanded the first jet recon squadron in the US Navy, graduated from the US War College, taught Naval and Military History at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, and served as Flag Secretary and Aide to the US Chief of Naval Operations. He subsequently served as Executive Officer and then Captain of the aircraft carrier USS Leyte. Among the naval experiences Kennedy relished was sharing drinks with Winston Churchill when he came to the US early in 1946 to give his famous "Iron Curtain" speech. Kennedy also enjoyed an honorary appointment as "Admiral of the Texas Navy", an award presented to him by Texas Governor Price Daniels in recognition of his wartime service. Kennedy was honorably discharged from the US Navy with the rank of Commander in 1961. Thereafter he served in several corporate posts including as Vice President of American Distilling Company and subsequently as President of Schenley International, where he oversaw marketing to Asia and Europe. He retired to Margate in 1986 and joined the Atlantic City Country Club, where he enjoyed many rounds of golf with his friends over the years. Kennedy is survived by his four nieces: Whitney Clay Diller of Nashville, Ashton deLashmet Clay of Chicago, Courtney Clay Peraza of Solana Beach, California, and Leslie Clay of Managua, Nicaragua. He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Berenice Connor Kennedy of Margate and his sister Patricia Kennedy Clay of West Virginia.
