Etat : Fair. New York: The Museum of Modern Art, (1947)., (1947). Fair. - Quarto, 12-3/4 inches high by 9-1/2 inches wide. A portfolio of 40 prints of Paul Klee's work laid loose with a bound softcover book with text by James Thrall Soby in a green board folding tray case with cotton ties. The case is heavily rubbed and soiled with wear to the edges and corners. A piece is out from the front edge of the case and the case's bottom green tie has been replaced with a blue one. The book, with text by Soby, is bound in yellow wraps decorated with an ideogram printed in green on the front cover. There is dampstaining along the edges of the wraps with a few small darker spots. The book consists of the title page, an "acknowledgment" leaf, pages i-xv, illustrated with 2 plates, [i], a 6 page list of plates and the colophon. The pages are wrinkled (possibly from humidity) with brown stains from the staples along the inner edges. Laid into the portfolio is a complete suite of 40 full-page plates in color and black & white. There is some minor soiling with minor corner creases to a few plates with heavier dampstaining along the front edge of one plate. Good. Second edition, limited to 2,000 copies printed by the Meriden Gravure Company and The Golden Eagle Press.

Box with paper label on front and spine contains string-bound booklet and 40 numbered loose plates; good condition; portfolio box has splits to the front edge of the spine and parts of the black linen cover are peeling away from the cardboard underbacking on top and bottom of spine of box; 4 of the loose prints ( # 19, 21 28, 30) have brown non-sticky residue on the rear sides in all 4 corners but the brown areas do not affect the front sides of any of the facing plates; otherwise plates are in very good condition; no tears to edges. Foreign shipping may be extra.

A couple of minor foxmarks, otherwise near fine in very good, somewhat spine sunned cloth folder with printed labels. First edition. One of 1000 sets, with the text volume printed at the Golden Eagle Press, and the loose plates by Meridan Gravure. Eight of the plates are in color and were reproduced via stencil by Esther Gentle. An impressive array of Klee's etchings and lithographs spanning the years 1903 - 1931. A second edition of 2000 copies appeared under the imprint of the MOMA in 1947.

Complete folio of 40 Paul Klee prints, plus string-bound book by Soby (1906-1979, who was an author, critic, connoisseur, collector and patron of the arts), housed in a black cloth chemise. First limited edition of 1,000 unnumbered copies. Condition notes, the prints: 40 individual prints, 8 in color, lt toning, slightly more at edges. Beautifully documents the evolution of Klee's style. Condition notes, book: string spine, paperback with narrow French flaps, xv numbered pages; includes 5 plates, a list of the folio prints, and a catalogue of all of Klee's prints. One instance of pencil marginalia in the book (easily erased). Condition notes, chemise: black cloth over boards with folding flaps inside to enclose the folio, pasters to front and spine; faint label residue to tail, several ghosts, spine paster well-toned, with narrow chips to its leading edge. Ex-library from the Philadelphia Museum of Art, a bookplate with "withdrawn" stamp to inside of chemise, plus the faint label residue the only evidence. This set donated to the Museum by Carl Zigrosser, the Art Prints Curator of the Museum 1941-1963, who helped establish many American artists, was a highly regarded authority in prints that raised the public's awareness for graphics as a serious art form, and who wrote 3 authoritative books on the topic. Photos shown are not exhaustive, but exemplify the quality and variety of the folio. Scarce to find a compete set.
