The letters, mainly by Odo Russell, 1st Lord Ampthill, 1827-1884, and by Sir Edward Baldwin Malet, 1837-1908, from Berlin, to the Foreign Secretary, Granville George Leveson-Gower, 2d earl Granville, 1815-1891, supply full background to the unification of Germany under Bismarck, and aspects of diplomatic activity concerning Egypt and the Congo.
