Kazimierz Kuratowski (1896-1980) was a distinguished Polish mathematician and logician, credited as one of the architects of modern topology. His influence extended far beyond Poland, leaving an indelible mark on research and education worldwide. This volume brings together 49 of Kuratowski's 172 research papers, showcasing his profound contributions to the field. Included are memoirs by Stanislaw Ulam, Kuratowski's first doctoral student ("Kazimierz Kuratowski: A Reminiscence"), and by Antoni Zygmund. Additionally, contributions by Ryszard Engelkind ("On the Topological Papers of Kazimierz Kuratowski") and by L. Pacholski and C. Ryll-Nardzewski ("On the Research Work of Kazimierz Kuratowski in Abstract and Descriptive Set Theory and in the Theory of Selectors") analyze Kuratowski's achievements in their respective fields. The volume also features Kuratowski's comprehensive bibliography, encompassing research papers, announcements, writings on mathematical life in Poland and the history of mathematics, as well as books and mimeographed lecture notes.

Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Near Fine. 1st Edition. First Edition in English. 283 pp; 27 figs. Original cloth. Very Good+, in very good+ dust jacket. International Series of Monographs on Pure and Applied Mathematics Volume 13. 'Kazimierz Kuratowski's main work was in the area of topology and set theory. He used the notion of a limit point to give closure axioms to define a topological space. He wrote an important textbook Set Theory and Topology for beginners. An English edition was published in 1961 with the Foreword to this edition written in Warsaw in September 1960. In this Foreword Kuratowski writes: 'The ideas and methods of set theory and topology permeate modern mathematics. It is no wonder then that the elements of these two mathematical disciplines are now an indispensable part of basic mathematical training. Concepts such as the union and intersection of sets, countability, closed set, metric space, and homeomorphic mapping are now classical notions in the whole framework of mathematics. The purpose of the present volume is to give an accessible presentation of the fundamental concepts of set theory and topology; special emphasis being placed on presenting the material from the viewpoint of its applicability to analysis, geometry, and other branches of mathematics such as probability theory and algebra. Consequently, results important for set theory and topology but not having close connection with other branches of mathematics, are given a minor role or are omitted entirely. Such topics are, for instance, axiomatic investigations, the theory of alephs, and the theory of curves' (MacTutor History of Mathematics Web site).

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. 8vo (22.5 cm), VIII, 204 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (dj slightly rubbed at extremities, ownership entry at the head of the title page). Kazimierz Kuratowski (1896-1980) was a Polish mathematician and logician, one of the leading representatives of the Warsaw School of Mathematics. He is the author of numerous works in set theory and topology, including the fundamental treatise on set-theoric topology (1934). This account is focused mainly on Polish mathematics in the period 1920-1970 and is based on the reminiscences of an eye-witness and participant of that great adventure which the birth of the Polish school of mathematics proved to be.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. 8vo (23 cm), XIVII, 514 pp. Publisher's cloth (canceled stamps of a mathematical institution verso the title page and on the last page). Second, completely revised edition. This seminal work by prominent Polish mathematicians serves as an invaluable resource for both students and researchers seeking to delve into the intricate structures and principles underlying modern mathematics. The authors intended to present the basic results of abstract set theory in the traditional order: algebra of sets, theory of cardinals, ordering and well-ordering of sets. The main field in which set-theoretical methods are illustrated is general topology. Through clear exposition and rigorous analysis, the authors elucidate fundamental notions such as sets, functions, and relations, while also delving into more advanced topics including cardinal and ordinal numbers, transfinite induction, and the axiom of choice. Additionally, the text offers a detailed introduction to descriptive set theory, offering insights into the classification and structure of sets of real numbers.

He was one of the leading representatives of the Warsaw School of Mathematics. His main contributions to mathematics include: - a characterization of Hausdorff spaces which are now called Kuratowski closure axioms; - proof of the Kuratowski-Zorn lemma; - in graph theory, the characterization of planar graphs now known as Kuratowski's theorem; - identification of the ordered pair (x,y) with the set {{x},{x,y}}; - introduction of the Tarski-Kuratowski algorithm; - Kuratowski's closure-complement problem; - Kuratowski's free set theorem; - Kuratowski convergence of subsets of metric spaces; - the Kuratowski, Ryll-Nardzewski measurable selection theorem; Kuratowski's post-war works were mainly focused on three strands: development of homotopy in continuous functions; construction of connected space theory in higher dimensions; uniform depiction of cutting Euclidean spaces by any of its subsets, based on the properties of continuous transformations of these sets.
