(gering kratzspurig, innen am oberen Schnitt teils etwas knapp beschnitten ohne Textverlust, nur sehr wenig gebräunt oder braunfleckig, insgesamt gut erhalten). Le Cène (um 1647 - 1703) war ein französischer Theologe von hugenottischer Herkunft, der in den Niederlanden und in England wirkte. Studiert hatte er in Sedan, Genf und Saumur, 1672 wurde er in Caen protestantisch ordiniert. Er wirkte in Honfleur und Charenton, bis er nach dem Widerruf des Ediktes von Nantes nach Den Haag floh. Die letzten Jahre seines Lebens verbrachte er in England, wo er auch starb. Er war radikaler Rationalist, der den orthodoxen Theologen der reformierten Kirche entgegentrat. Le Cène ging von der Überlegenheit der menschlichen Vernunft aus und las aus der Bibel die Grösse des Menschen heraus, was im Gegensatz zur orthodoxen Lesart stand, die die Verdorbenheit des Menschen betonte. Seine rationalistische Kritik mündete wie bei Sozzini in eine ethische Akzentuierung des Christentums - teils frei zitiert nach Erich Haase, "Einführung in die Literatur des Refuge", 1959. Der Einband ist signiert "Bagguley", das ist George Thomas Bagguley (1860 - nach 1934), tätig in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire.

Version complète de la Bible par Charles Lecène (1647-1703), savant théologien protestant français d'obédience arménienne. ?Cette traduction de la Bible est très rare, parce qu'elle a été confisquée à Groningue (nord de la Hollande) par un arrêt du 24 juillet 1747, à cause des opinions sociniennes de l'auteur.? (Graesse). Cette Bible a été publiée à Amsterdam par le fils du théologien, qui y exerçait le métier d'imprimeur. Michel-Charles Lecène a pris soin de faire précéder les Saintes Ecritures éditées par son père par l'essai préliminaire «Projet d'une nouvelle version française de la Bible», publiée pour la première fois en 1698, mais augmentée ici d'une seconde partie, destinée à répondre aux attaques dont le projet avait été l'objet. La traduction de Lecène, estimable, excellente en ce qui concerne l'établissement du texte et la correction de diverses erreurs, n'en a pas moins soulevé des polémiques par les hardiesses du style: ?Cette traduction, qui a le mérite d'un style clair et coulant, offre d'un autre côté des défauts considérables? (Hoefer, en 1859). Le synode de l'Eglise wallonne condamna cette traduction en 1742; elle fut également condamnée par les autorités civiles et saisie en 1747.
