Hardcover. Etat : Very Good+. Early Reprint. This book is in Very Good+ condition and is lacking a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in mostly clean, bright condition. There is some light rubbing and bumping to the spine ends and corners of the book covers. The text pages are generally clean and bright. There is a strip of toning to the front endpaper and a previous owner's bookplate (Frances Rasmussen) on the front pastedown page. "William Tufnell Le Queux (2 July 1864 - 13 October 1927) was an Anglo-French journalist and writer. He was also a diplomat (honorary consul for San Marino) , a traveller (in Europe, the Balkans and North Africa) , a flying buff who officiated at the first British air meeting at Doncaster in 1909, and a wireless pioneer who broadcast music from his own station long before radio was generally available; his claims regarding his own abilities and exploits, however, were usually exaggerated. His best-known works are the anti-French and anti-Russian invasion fantasy The Great War in England in 1897 (1894) and the anti-German invasion fantasy The Invasion of 1910 (1906) , the latter of which was a phenomenal bestseller. " (from Wikipedia).

In his introduction, intelligence historian Nicholas Hiley explains how Le Queux's powerful blend of fact and fiction inspired a whole generation of British secret service officers, and led MI5 in a nation-wide hunt for a non-existent enemy. One page,12mo, a scrawl, good condition: "Don't trouble about 'Secrets of State'. The price they could pay is not worth paper & ink [phrase underlined]! | Your old friend | William Le Queux."Secrets of State" could well have been the following (see entry on via Libri, Sanctuary Books): "Manuscript of "Secrets I Have Known" c. 1920. Ephemera. Near Fine. Manuscript on lined paper, bound by a single post at the top corner; 200x255mm; pp. 32, cursive handwriting in purple ink, on the recto only. It begins, "In the course of an erratic & wandering life I have mostly for the purpose of obtaining first hand knowledge of the seamy & more sensational -- of cosmopolitan life been forced to keep queer company in many Continental cities." This cataloguer wonders if this item remained unpublished, or if it's an early draft of "Society Intrigues I Have Known." It may have been published by Odhams in 1920, as a short story." See Image.
