English translation of Chapter I of the Book of Isaiah glued to back of title page in vol. II. Latin introduction with Hebrew text. Title continues: "Athiae a Johanne Leusden Denuo recognitam, Recensita, Atque ad Masoram, et Correctiores, Bombergi, Stephani, Plantini, Aliorumque Editiones, Exquisite Adorrrata, Variisque Notis Illustrata, ab Everardo Van Der Hooght, V. D. M." Dr. Thomas Bray was one of the founders of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge in 1698 and the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in 1701. He was appointed to preside over ministers sent to Maryland, his acceptance being based upon the proposition that parochial libraries be provided for ministers sent overseas. Bray understood that the lack of available books would be a serious hindrance to ministers too poor to build up their own libraries. Dr. Bray provided 16 libraries for Maryland, including Annapolis, the first lending library in America, which consisted of about 1000 volumes and cost £400. He also founded libraries in Carolina, Rhode Island, New York, Boston, Philadelphia, the Bermudas, the Bahamas, etc. Bray himself donated £500 to these American libraries, the other subscriptions received having fallen short of the amount needed. His efforts to obtain subscriptions for these libraries occasionally met with the remark that "Charity begins at home." Recognizing the justice of this criticism, he began a programme for providing libraries for the home clergy with lending libraries formed throughout England. One of his proposals was that booksellers would provide books for foreign libraries free of charge in return for the purchase of books for local lending libraries. Bray proposed also that the lending libraries should be movable and travel abroad. Because of the possibility of loss, the books would be marked according to what Deanery they belonged. In 1701 he published "Several Circular Letters" that said "I do therefore conclude it equally necessary to have in each parish a Collection of plain practical Books, for the use of the Laity that the Defects of publick Teaching may be supplied this way." George Smith wrote in the Library Association Record: "To initiate so large a design would seem to demand a colossal fortune, to require its proposer to be of the highest rank and influence, and to need the assistance of the State; but it was commenced, and to a great extent carried out, not by any of these means, but by the unselfish sacrifice, the inspiring enthusiasm, and the practical common sense of its originator".

Edition originale
1 vol. In° 16 (120 x 70 mm) de : [8] ff. (titre, avis au lecteur, tables); 703pp; [1] p. (avis d imprimeur). 1 volume 16-to (120 x 70 mm) of : [8] ff. (title, notice to the reader, tables) ; 703pp ; [1] p. (printer's notice). Full contemporary calf, spine ribbed and decorated with fleurons, red speckled edges. Greek edition of the New Testament by Johannes Leusden (1624-1699), a famous Dutch orientalist and Calvinist, professor of theology and Hebrew in Utrecht. In a portable format for practical purposes, this New Testament is written entirely in Greek except for the title, which is bilingual Greek/Latin, and the preface and notice to the printer, which are in Latin only. Born in Utrecht and educated in Amsterdam, Leusden was one of the greatest biblical scholars of his time. Author of numerous works, he wrote extensively on Hebrew philology including: Philologus Hebraeus (1656), Philologus Hebraeo-Mixtus (1663) or Philologus Hebraeo-Graecus (1670). In 1661, he published his Biblia Hebraica, the first edition of the Hebrew Bible with numbered verses. However, Leudsen's copious annotations attached to the latter made him the target of strong criticism from the clergy in his time and later. Indeed, the Catholic Encyclopedia of 1913 rejected Leusden's notes. In addition to his supplements to the text, which were not unanimously accepted by the clergy, Leusden's work on the biblical texts is nonetheless substantial and of notable interest for theology and the history of religions. This numbering initiated in his Biblia Hebraica is also used for this Novum Testamenti (1688), in Greek. A fine copy of this New Testament in Greek, the work of Johannes Leusden.
