As owner and editor of the newspaper, Pixley exerted substantial influence on San Francisco's literary scene at the turn of the century, and his commentaries reflect many of the beliefs of his era. Staff members included American author Ambrose Bierce, and Pixley was among the first to publish Gertrude Atherton. Illustrations throughout taken from the Argonaut and other contemporary sources. Eight plates throughout the text.

This work is an important history of the early days of San Francisco and the exploits of Frank Morrison Pixley who rose to a high degree of power and influence. The period covered is from 1852 to 1895. Pixley was the founder and editor of The Argonaut, one of the city's important papers, from 1877 to 1891. He was also a politcal activist involved with the building of the transcontinental railroad, and friends with Leland Stanford. The illustrations and chapter headings are from The Argonaut, plus photographs of early San Francisco. There is an epilogue, bibliography, and the endpapers are samples of The Argonaut. This copy is clean, solid, and appears unread. The original white dust jacket is in mylar. This is part of a limited edition of 450 copies.
