History Series Volume 12. 8vo. pp. xii, 288. Two illustrations. One map. Paperback. Presentation copy: 'Felipe [Fernández-Armesto] from Karl.' Two handwritten signed letters loosely inserted from Karl Leyser to Felipe [Fernández-Armesto] written on headed notepaper from All Souls College, Oxford OX1 4AL, the first dated 1. xii. 1987 consists of about 100 words in which he thanks Fernández-Armesto for his book which he 'has plunged into with much pleasure.' Presumably he encloses the book saying, 'May I send you this as a token of thanks.' The second letter addressed as above and undated consists of about 60 words in which he describes an 'essay crisis' saying 'Yes, they happen to me still as they did 44 years ago.' The task is a lecture in German for a German university. Rough notes and telephone numbers probably in Felipe Fernández-Armesto's hand at end of second letter. Karl Joseph Leyser (1920 1992) was a German born British historian who was Fellow and Tutor in History at Magdalen College, Oxford from 1948 to 1984 and Chichele Professor of Medieval History at Oxford from 1984 to 1988. Felipe Fernández-Armesto (born 1950) is a British historian who studied and taught at Oxford. His book 'The Canary Islands after the Conquest: The Making of a Colonial Society in the Early Sixteenth Century' was published in 1982. Very good. Very good.
