A fascinating work on the excavations at Cranmore Chase by archaeologist Augustus Pitt-Rivers, presentation copies from the author, and previously owned by British archaeologist David Phillipson. A fascinating and highly detailed first-hand account of the excavations at Cranborne Chase, a 32,000 acre estate given to Lieutenant-General Augustus Pitt-Rivers from his cousin, Lord Rivers. Containing information about the excavations in Barrows near Rushmore, Rotherley, Winkelbury Camp,Lieutenant-General Augustus Pitt-Rivers was an accomplished nineteenth-century archaeologist and ethnologist, and the Cranborne Estate he inherited contained a wealth of antiquities from the Roman and Saxon periods.Complete in five volumes.Illustrated with three hundred and eighteen plates, seventeen of which are folding. Collated and complete.Volume I contains a tipped-in letter from the author from Rushmore, Salisbury. The letter contains a small stamp from Cardiff Public Libraries.Volume I and II are presentation copies from the author to one Clement Waldron of Llandaff, and contain presentation inscriptions to the title pages.This set was previously owned by renowned British archaeologist David W. Phillipson, noted by his bookplate to the front pastedown of each volume.Also containing a bookplate for 'Humphry Gifford' to the verso of the front free-endpaper of Volume IV. Also containing the bookplate of 'Henry Whitty Devenish' to the front pastedown of Volume V.Volumes I and IV are in rebound blue cloth, and Volumes II, III, and V are in the original blue cloth binding Volumes I and IV are in rebound blue cloth, and Volumes II, III, and V are in the original blue cloth binding.Externally, smart, with significant bumping to the head and tail of Volume II, and light bumping to the heads and tails of the spines and extremities of Volumes III and V. Minor shelf wear to the boards of Volumes II, III, and V. Internally, front hinges to Volumes II and III are starting, remaining binding is firm. A few spots to the fore-edges, and a few handling marks and spots to the pages, which are otherwise generally bright and clean. Very Good. signed by author. book.
