Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good+. Illustrated by Erin McKee (illustrateur). New Edition; 1st Printing. Cover Art; This book is in Near Fine condition and has a Very Good+ dust jacket. The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. The text pages are clean and bright. The dust jacket is in mostly clean, bright condition, but has some water staining to the reverse of the bottom spine end. "Quite as strange as the central figure are the other characters in the story: the young and fantastic German intellectual, the exiled ancient Russian prince, the broken-down English madam, the lovely blond Swedish girl, Ria's helpful and irrepressible mother, and half a dozen others, including the magnificent golden cat, Sardanapal. It is safe to say that Felix C. Forrest has scored an outstanding success with his first book of fiction. Before the war Mr. Forrest had written extensively in his professional field, but this is his first book of general interest. Born in 1913, the author has lived much of his life abroad. As a very young child, he was taken to Japan, and he still regards the Inland Sea as the most beautiful spot on earth. Later, as readers of this novel will understand, he lived on the Riviera and in the Black Forest. He has also lived in China and in southern England. As a result, he says now that at any given place he is apt to find himself homesick for all the rest of the world." (from the Cordwainer Smith website).

Hardcover. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Fine. 2nd Edition. Second edition first printing (first edition 1947). Hardback book is tight clean and square. Boards sharp and clean, except for a light bump to the top corner of the lower board. Very sharp spine ends, title gilt perfect. Text block clean, with white edges. The pages are crisp and unblemished. Feels very tight and lightly read. Fine condition. Jacket lovely and glossy unmarked, Jacket grades fine. For grading accuracy books are photographed without a protective book cover. This book is fitted with a non adhesive archival quality book protector to make a worthy addition to your collection. Note we do not use stock images, the book pictured is the book described. Felix C. Forest is a pseudonym of Paul Linebarger, who also wrote as Cordwainer Smith. A fine copy of this very uncommon hardback book, originally issued in 1947. Whilst this book is not core SF it has some SF elements, notably an interesting cat. It is understood by academics as the book where the main themes from the later Cordwainer Smith stories are first seen: exploring common elements of human experience; introspective style; and cats. Comes from the estate of Roger Earnshaw, SF collector, well known at British conventions and fandom.
