Hardback. Etat : Mint. Etat de la jaquette : Mint. First Edition. THE BLACK WATCH The History of the Royal highland Regiment. Eric and Andro Linklator. Barrie & Jenkins, London. 1977 First Edition ISBN 0214200833 240pp Illustrated Hardback. This copy is in remarkably well preserved mint condition in a mint price clipped dust wrapper. The essence of 'The Black Watch' story is its imperial service in America, India and Africa, the epic battles against the French in Europe and in the two world wars of the 20th century when thousands of men fought- and died in the Black Watch battalions. These are admirably evoked in a fluent, intimate account by Eric Linklater, the distinguished Scottish author who served in the Regiment as a very young man. Linklater and his son Andro, who saw the book to publication after his father died, give a strong sense of the family-like esprit de corps in the Black Watch. It is not however a hagiography. The regiment's less happy episodes are also examined in an even-handed, humane manner. Handsomely produced and illustrated. Long out of print. Ref EE3.

Hard Cover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. First Edition. 240 pp, small 4to (10 1/8" H). B&w photographs, reproductions, maps, colour plates. "The Black Watch, since its formation in the 18th century, has been committed in so many engagements in so many parts of the world that its history is indissolubly intertwined with the history of Britain. The War of American Independence, Napoleon's Egyptian campaign, Quatre Bras and Waterloo, the Crimea, the Indian Mutiny, and World Wars I and II - in all these, and more, The Black Watch has played a distinguished part. In (this) history of the Regiment from its formation to its recent duties in Northern Ireland, the spirit, resourcefulness, fierce courage and regimental pride of The Black Watch can be seen throughout. Based on a multitude of contemporary records, diaries and memoirs and fully illustrated, this history was begun by Eric Linklater, himself a private in the Regiment in World War I, who had written several chapters and done much research by the time of his death. It has been ably completed by his younger son, Andro." Previous owner's small stamp on front pastedown, faint erased pencil marks on front free endpaper, faint tiny foxing marks on top of textblock, minor edgewear, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, has light edge wrinkling, very light edgewear, light rubbing.
