Very good condition. (Mendelssohn I, p. 243) "After a short account of the establishment of the Cape Colony, the work resolves itself into a history of the Boers, from the time of the Great Trek to the signing of the first convention at Pretoria. The volume is written from the Boer standpoint, and contains a coloured title-page [not this copy], a large map of South Africa [not this copy], a map of the Transvaal, and a few remarkably life-like illustrations." - Mendelssohn. The Second Kitchener's Fighting Scouts, under Colonel Wilson, were railed to the Orange River Colony in the second half of 1901, and had numerous engagements with the Boer guerillas during the concluding phase of the Second Anglo-Boer War. It was during this period that this book was acquired by the trooper whose inscription appears on the front free endpaper. We have not been able to find any unit record of the soldier concerned.
