Soft cover. Etat : Very Good. 1st Edition. BOOK DESCRIPTION: Original Printed Wrappers, 87 pgs., unit roster 64-87. No portrait frontis, as issued in some copies. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Small chips on front cover edges; spine repaired with archival cloth tape. Interior is clean and tight. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The 1st Virginia Infantry completed its organization at Richmond, Virginia, in May 1861. It fought with the Army of Northern Virginia throughout the war and only 17 surrendered on April 9, 1865. The author, Charles Theodore Loehr (1842-1915) served in the Old Dominion Guard, officially known as Company D of the 1st Virginia. From the introduction: It was the writer's peculiar good luck to have been able to verify in person all the scenes he describes; he participated in all the battles and marches of the regiment, from its muster into service of the State, April 1861, to the Battle of Five Forks, April 1, 1865 where he was taken prisoner. Very scarce original publication. Most of the book concerns the numerous engagements in which the regiment participated. It fought at the Battle of First Bull Run (First Manassas) in a brigade under James Longstreet. During April 1862, when the regiment was reorganized, it contained only six companies. The 1st Virginia Infantry was assigned to A. P. Hill's, Kemper's, and W. R. Terry's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. It was active from the Battle of Williamsburg to the Battle of Gettysburg, where Loehr was reported to have been wounded during Pickett s Charge. The 1st Virginia was with Longstreet at the Siege of Suffolk, Virginia. Later the unit was involved in the capture of Plymouth, the conflicts at Drewry's Bluff and Cold Harbor, the Siege of Petersburg south and north of the James River, and the Appomattox Campaign. After the war, Loehr wrote this regimental history of the 1st VA in 1884 and was a prominent member of the First Regiment Association of Richmond which he helped organize, and was commander. Loehr died on 5 March 1915 and is buried in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond. REFERENCES: DORN II 1315; NEVINS I pg. 122: Only fifty pages of this slim volume comprise Loehr s diary-based reminiscences, but they are an above-average personal narrative on service in Lee s army.
